Hi everyone,
The movement strategy transition team is happy to share summaries from
follow-up discussions that took place in January and February.
The aim of the discussions was to come up with objectives for implementing
each initiative or cluster of initiatives that communities had previously
prioritized. The needed steps as well as challenges and anticipated
resources were also discussed to varying degrees.
We kindly ask you to review the summaries
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transit…>[1]
by March 15, particularly for initiatives that are a priority for you and
your community, and to help finalize the draft plan. This is also where we
invite you to indicate your interest to be part of working groups that will
be convened for each initiative to take the work forward. More information
below.
Quick recap
In November
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transit…>
[2] and December
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transit…>
[3], the Movement Strategy team hosted global conversations to identify
priority areas for collaboration in 2021. Distributed governance, resources
for underrepresented communities, improved user experience, addressing
content gaps, and facilitating skill development in the movement were among
the top priorities.
Our promise had been to host at least one follow-up discussion for each
initiative. Thanks to your participation and support from community members
and affiliates from around the world, this was successfully achieved.151
people participated in large discussions for the Interim Global Council and
90 for hubs. An average of 60 people participated in each of the other
follow-up discussions that took place from January 22 to February 7.
Commitment to equity in decision-making
Distributed leadership, global governance, and inclusive decision-making
were key threads in the movement strategy recommendations. This has been
reiterated in local and global discussions since and the Wikimedia
Foundation is committed to supporting the realization of this vision and
the establishment of a Global Council - by the way of an interim council
that will draft the Movement Charter. The exact structure and set up of
this Interim Global Council will continue to be shaped by communities in
virtual and on-wiki discussions
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transit…>
.[4]
Next steps
Until March 15, we invite community members, affiliates, and strategy
enthusiasts from the whole movement to help finalize the first ever
implementation plan for movement strategy:
-
How can the stated objectives become realistic and inclusive steps for
implementation?
-
Did the discussions miss anything?
You can continue to indicate on meta, under respective initiative sub-pages
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transit…>
[5], if you would like to take part in the next steps of developing the
initiatives and in their implementation. In upcoming months we are planning
to convene working groups with contributing community, affiliate, and
Wikimedia Foundation staff members to be tasked with scoping their
respective initiative and taking the work forward. We will keep everyone
who has indicated their interest on meta in loop and will share more
specific information regarding ways to participate in our future updates.

Hello everyone,
I hope you are all doing well and keeping safe.
I am writing to inform you that the Wikimedia Community in Arusha is
planning to hold a series of Art and Feminism edit-a-thons and thus
applying for a rapid grant to support the events. Please see and endorse
the proposal here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/Wikimedia_Community_Ar…>
.
Best regards,
Eben
Dear Wikimedians,
This email is to request your participation in a survey to ascertain if we
should host an exclusively online WikiIndaba conference or a hybrid event.
As you may recall that the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) had to halt all
in-person events in response to the COVID-19 pandemic
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_pandemic>, this had an effect on
the planned 2020 WikiIndaba annual conference which too, had to be
postponed to take place in 2021, hoping that the situation would have
improved to allow an in-person event. However, the situation hasn’t changed
much and it's hard to predict what is going to happen in the near future.
In this regard, the Wikimedia Foundation’s COVID-19 Risk Assessment protocol
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Risk_assessment_during_COVID-19>
and assessment tool
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YRtna7axYEPK-b8s8dJTK8-0a-kSnDC8oyT…>
have to be used for in-person events that are more than 10 people.
During the last year, Wikimedia movement organizers across the movement had
to adjust to different formats and ways of engaging with the community. For
this reason, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) in Uganda
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Community_User_Group_Uganda>,
together with the WikiIndaba Steering Committee (WISCom) have had
discussions about having a conference which will ensure everyone is able
to attend. Thus, we request your participation in this survey
<https://forms.gle/FJKZ1LmG67Z6iXfq5> to ascertain if we should host the
2021 WikiIndaba exclusively online or have a hybrid event. This has
implications on the type of grant funding we will be applying for as well
as reporting. However, to be more inclusive in our decision, we would like
you to take part in this survey.
We do believe there are benefits that come with organizing WikiIndaba this
year, it would allow more people from Africa and all over the world to
participate in WikiIndaba.
Please give us your feedback no later than 20th February by responding to
this survey *https://forms.gle/mrjpMk4vaLbpiKMt9

Kind regards,
Geoffrey Kateregga

Committee

Hello everyone,
Our current processes to select individual volunteer and affiliate seats
have some limitations. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the
leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and
experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the
ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a
fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America
and Western Europe. Meanwhile, our movement has grown larger and more
complex, our technical and strategic needs have increased, and we have new
and more difficult policy challenges around the globe. As well, our
Movement Strategy recommendations urge us to increase our diversity and
promote perspectives from other regions and other social backgrounds.
The board and some community members have proposed various ideas to help
solve this problem here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Wikimedia_Foundation_Boa…>
and
the board needs your feedback on the proposed ideas, or you are welcome to
propose a new idea. You can leave your feedback on the talk pages of the
various ideas.
Also, this form

provides an option for people who may not wish to publish feedback publicly
themselves.
