Greetings!
Apologies for cross-posting. This is to introduce a new Wikimedia project called "The AfroCine Project".[1] This new project is dedicated to improving the coverage of the history, works, people, places, events, etc, that are associated with the cinema, theatre and arts of Africa, African countries, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. If you would love to be part of this (or you're already active in this area), by coordinating local programmes around African cinema (independently or otherwise) in your community or local Wiki, kindly list your username or organization as a participant on the meta project page cited above.
Furthermore, In the months of October and November, we are organizing a global contest and edit-a-thon tagged: "The Months of African Cinema".[2] If you would love to join this exciting event, also list your username as a participant on the English Wikipedia contest page. If you would love to lead this contest (or any other relevant program) for a non-English Wikipedia community, please feel free to translate the English Wikiproject page to your local language Wikipedia, or you can create one from scratch!
If you have any questions, complaints, suggestions, etc., please reach out to me personally or right here on the mailing list or the project talkpages.
Thank you!
Sam Oyeyele.

Hi all,
In preparation for the upcoming Wikimedia Conference 2019 – which will take
place from March 29 to March 31 in Berlin, Germany[1] – we again launch a
call for a “Visiting Wikimedian”. This initiative aims to transfer
practical knowledge from the German chapter to other Wikimedia movement
affiliates and provides us with an outside view.
The scope of a “Visiting Wikimedian” is mainly to support the organization
of the Wikimedia Conference in terms of logistics and program. The “Visiting
Wikimedian” will be involved in all essential steps of the planning and
organizing process and will be able to contribute in multiple ways. We are
open to designing the tasks together, according to the Visiting Wikimedian’s
skills and experiences and her or his affiliate’s needs. We are especially
looking for a person who can apply the knowledge to an upcoming event, for
example if the affiliate is hosting a regional or international conference.
You can find more information about the initiative and all application
details on Meta.[2] We had three Visiting Wikimedians over the last years,
check also their blost posts on the linked on the Meta page.
If you are interested in becoming a Visiting Wikimedian, please check the
conditions and details on Meta and apply to wmcon(a)wikimedia.de until
September 19, 2019 (incl).
Best regards,
Cornelius

For:Organizing Committee
Hello everyone,
I set up a page on the Wiki Loves Africa portal.
This is here :
What is it ?
It is a call to action with a set of goals. The goal is to make sure
that AT LEAST 3000 pictures from each Wiki Loves Africa are reused in
Wikipedia.
Not 3000 unique pictures. A picture may be used on several languages.
How is it done ?
I used Glamify. That tool look at which image is currently used in an
article in a source language, and when it is, it looks if this article
has an equivalent article in another language (the target). If it does
and if the picture is only used in the source language, then it will
suggest adding it to the target language.
Example here :
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2017/Call_to_a…
There are 4 images currently used in an English article which could be
used in a Yoruba article.
How the call is going to work ?
There is the page. On the page, you may see the usage starting point.
For example, for Wiki Loves Africa 2014, there are 1717 images used.
Majority on the French Wikipedia. Then a hundred or so in English and
Arabic. Then usage goes down for the other languages (I only added the
top 10).
Chance is that those uses in French, English and Arabic can help figure
out where to add those pictures in other languages. Right ?
Check out the queries below in the page, and use them to add pictures. I
listed a bunch of queries examples (more queries can be done of course).
Then I added a %bar, which is fully manually managed. Hopefully... we'll
reach 100% at some point...
There is no deadline really... The sooner we reach 3000, the better :)
How can you use that call ?
As an individual from your home of course.
But I also suggest that page can be used to coordinate and foster
activities during an edit-a-thon. It is a good opportunity to learn how
to insert images properly, position, legend, gallery maybe. Also a good
opportunity to make sure the image has enough categories and description
in all languages.
Perhaps doing a fresh query and making it a challenge to insert all
relevant pictures from English to a local language wikipedia over an
edit-a-thon?
I hope you enjoy it
*********
Additional help call...
1) This page would benefit from more queries being added (such as ...
Arabic inspire English etc.)
All current queries are here :
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2017/Call_to_…
2) The queries are done by hand (request one query by one query on
Glamify; then research and replace some content so that the links work
on Commons rather than meta). This is a bit ridiculous as obviously
those queries could be fully automated. If any one feel like doing a
little bit of magic here to get it done automatically... would be awesome.
3) If anyone feel like updating the page to make it look nicer, more
appealing, clearer... BE MY GUEST. Please do.

Good morning,
I'm not sure if this info was already sent to the list, but seems like
something of great interest, so I'm taking the risk.

Hi all
UNESCO are running a regional training on cultural heritage representations
in the Arab region (deadline Sept 10th). All expenses will be covered, more
information is available here.

I think having someone involved in WLM would be amazing. Also I'd like to
explore how we can share some of this knowledge more widely with WLM
outside of the workshop.
Best
John
