Hello guys
Wiki Loves Africa is closing tonight :)
I see some teams still have events and uploads sessions today and this
is great.
Overall slighly less pictures this year than last year; and generally
more off-topic than previous years (no idea why...) but of much higher
quality generally ! So this is really cool !
All focus countries enjoy pretty high participation rates (*), which is
a pleasure.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Africa_2…
-------
If you are still in mass upload sessions and _do not go through the
upload page_, I would like to ask, please, to make sure that you
pictures are taggued with
{{Wiki Loves Africa 2016}}
[[Category:Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2016 without categories]] (if
you do not put categories beside the maintenance ones)
But generally, I would advise you to start an upload session by clicking
on that GREEN button here :
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2016/Participa…
It automatically tag pictures and reduce the manual workload afterwards.
Thanks
Flo
PS: I'll post by tomorrow the outcome of the discussions on WLAf at
WikiIndaba.
(*) Except Zimbabwe, but they could not get the funding until early
January + it is a brand new group struggling to get things set up. So
nothing unexpected here.

Dear Wikimedians
So looking forward to seeing some of you in Accra this week, but before that … Please can the teams, or anyone else, suggest jury members from your countries or the wider Wikimedia community. We are looking 1. for communists (so, people who have an idea of what the community is about and how it works), 2. notable photographers. Please let me know your thoughts either on-list or off, by the end of this week.
Thanks!

Hi, I tried to understand the problem. Not so easy in detail.
I see that they played at international tournaments, there are no
further sources except that they are mentioned in team lists.
That is not much but by my reading fulfills requirement of notability.
Did anyone of you try to communicate with the group at work over there
at enwiki? I did not find the place where reasons are given. Anyone
knows if arguing is worth while?
Cheers

Hello there
So....I just checked the recent activity on the Wiki Loves Women
assessment board.
And my attention was raised by a serious list of red links (which used
to be blue... right ?)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Wiki_Loves_Women/Assess…
It appears that all those articles were bot-moved from article status to
"draft" status. They were all created by User:Sander.v.Ginkel (for a
grand total of 16,104 articles) due to various quality issues.
All articles created were moved to draft space, where they can rescued
one by one (being fixed first).
Upon quick checking... roughly 300 african women articles were concerned
by the purge. It appears that many of them are about footballers (I
opened 10 articles and the 10 were of that sort), a lot being Ghanean
Quick sampling
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Belinda_Kanda (Ghanean football
player)
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Maureen_Eke (Nigerian football player)
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Aminatu_Ibrahim (Ghanean football
player)
It is possible to volunteer to rescue those articles (fix them, then
move them back in the main space).

Subject: [GLAM] #1lib1ref mid-campaign update
To: "Wikimedia & GLAM collaboration [Public]" <glam(a)lists.wikimedia.org>,
Wikimedia Chapters cultural partners coordination <
cultural-partners(a)wikimedia.ch>, North American Cultural Partnerships <
glam-us(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, Wikimedia & Libraries <
libraries(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hey #1lib1ref organizers, WikiLibrarians and GLAM-Wiki enthusiasts,
We wanted to send a brief update on how the campaign is going:
As of writing the email, the campaign has tracked over 1930 contributions
by 392 contributos in 1332 articles in 15 different languages (remember we
expect we are missing 1/4-1/2 of contributions that don't use the hashtag).
This well surpasses our [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wi
ki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Lessons contributions from last year],
and we still have another week and a half to go! We published a brief
update blog at https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/01/24/1lib1ref-first-week-
highlights/ to highlight these accomplishments.
We have seen a slightly smaller amount of blogging and newsletters as part
of the Campaign this year. We think this may be in part, because the
campaign is less novel and in part because of the broad number of
distractions in the press at the moment (we actually think this means we
have been more grassroots this year which is a good signal for the network
for Wikipedia and libraries). If you find pieces of press or blogs, make
sure to share them at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/
wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Press
We are testing a Central Notice Banner, to encourage Wikimedians to go talk
to their librarians about #1lib1ref. So far we have seen pageview activity
from Wikipedians, but it is not clear how much that will transfer into
activity. We have yet to see a social media boost or huge boost in
participation using the hashtag. If you want to try the banner in your
language, instructions are below [1]
We could still use your help reminding librarians in your context to
participate! Something as simple as visiting your library and showing the
librarians how to add a citation to Wikipedia, or sending an email to your
local library organiziations, would be awesome. Sharing in digital
communications attracts some participants to the campaign, but we also know
that many of participants are encouraged by friends, peers, colleagues or
patrons to participate.
We look forward to seeing what other activities events emerge this year. If
you need help, make sure to contact the Wikipedia Library team.
Keep up the energy through February 3!
Alex Stinson

Hello everybody
I hope everybody returned home safely and in good spirits! Just wanted
to say I had a good time and enjoyed very much to see you all. The time
spent on crowded aeroplanes and waiting for connections was worth while.
I add that I uploaded a slightly enhanced version of my presentation
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:African_language_Wikipedias_2017_In…
(I had shortened it actually because of having to share the slot with
Anas). The entry for https://sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/WikiIndaba_2017 is up
on swwiki (one reason more for all of you to learn that language!)
Once more thanks to the preparing team! Hope you can relax now a bit. Cheers

Hi everyone,
We are once again in the process of co-organizing the international Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thons and we are writing to solicit your participation. This could take the form of forwarding this call onto folks you think would want to organize an event; sharing info about the project on your social media channels; organizing your own edit-a-thon; or any other way you can think to spread the word. Any and all participation is greatly appreciated!
--
Call for Participation: 4th Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, March, 2017DON’T AGONIZE, ORGANIZE! The award winning, record breaking Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is happening this March. Join us again or organize for the first time to improve Wikipedia and affirm the importance of the arts and intersectional feminisms. It matters more than ever as we face a post-fact world, and what may follow. Email us at info(a)artandfeminism.org to learn more about organizing an event.
WHY?Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of the disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of female participation. Established in 2014, Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is a response to the gender gap in content and participation on Wikipedia.
As the lead co-organizers of Art+Feminism, we’ve been deeply disturbed by the sheer amount of fake news on social media, and its influence on the recent US election. We believe this makes our work even more pressing. Now more than ever we must gather together to improve Wikipedia and affirm work of women, people of color, immigrants, the LGBTQIA+ community and other marginalized peoples.
HOW?Hold an Edit-a-thon at your local university, artist run center, museum, community center, etc! Art+Feminism Edit-a-thons address content and participation gaps by inviting people of all gender identities and expressions to gather for communal updating of Wikipedia entries related to art and feminism. The leadership collective supports Edit-a-thon organizers by: providing an organizer’s kit with suggested workflow, promotional and training materials, and more; funding to defray the costs of refreshments and childcare; and training and support.
WHEN?The 2017 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at The Museum of Modern Art, New York will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2017. Node events are welcome to hold their event on this day or any other date in March, 2017 that makes sense for your community.
