I think that we can help most users more if we identify the most important use cases and focus on making those *really* easy. The installation in exotic scenarios should still be supported, but I think it's okay if it involves following some instructions manually.
My gut feel is that most users are in the situation of having a free choice of hosting provider or distribution. If we can't find a good solution that satisfies our requirements *and* works well across distributions, then I think focusing on Debian / Ubuntu should be okay.
