Yes, I looked pretty dumb on this one :-)
I made a few extensions for mediawiki always with a simple text editor.
I've never used CVS, because it is not much in use in human resources
lessons :-)
So today I had to install a cvs client, find out how it works, and
discover that it required a name for a module... which I didn't have.
If you think that I'm a bit of a lost cause, you might be right :-)

The module with core MediaWiki code is 'phase3'. That said, since you
weren't able to figure it out on your own, you probably *really* don't
want to be running code from CVS. I suggest you grab the latest 1.5
release from here, instead:
