Also, afaik this is common practise. For example, mysql and squid also do so.
I'd prefer keeping the patch credits for external suppliers.
I've considered in the past that we might have a "contributors"
section in RELEASE-NOTES, and just add all contributors for a
particular version to that, rather than a) acknowledging only people
without commit access, and b) having the ones we do acknowledge
scattered through the feature list attached to which features they
contributed patches for, rather than centralized in a simple list.
