I figure this might be of interest to some here: we could make sponsorship of contributions more evident by adding a git commit pseudo-header:
Sponsored-by: Name Of Sponsoring Entity
Obviously this would be optional, and only used by those who want to.
Spelled out in a little more detail: https://blog.liw.fi/posts/2021/05/26/sponsored-by/
Sound good to me, might help get some statistics out of projects way easier :)
I'm willing to help with some scripts/hooks to set it up if needed (though I'm suspicious they already exist xd).

I added a line to my git commit template, and it suffices for me so far. I'm sure this can be made smoother.
For this to work well, I think it would be useful to document somewhere how sponsoring organizations should be identified. Things like "WMF" vs "Wikimedia Foundation", and should departments/teams also be identified? If departments/teams are going to be included, should they be free-form ("Wikimedia Foundation Release Engineering") or more structured ("wmf-releng" or "wmf/tech/releng")?

Ideally we could use something like orcid (used that a lot in my past at CERN to identify authors/institutions): https://orcid.org/
But yep, some standardization would be good (specially for adoption, though for starters we might be able to do without, same as author and such).
