Well the query was on the merged UNION result, which makes it a subquery.
I'll see if 4 supports more explicit temporary table syntax as a work
around.

Subqueries aren't supported by MySQL 4.0.
I've reverted SpecialWhatlinkshere.php to the pre-r35371 state so it
works again on Wikimedia.
I don't see any subqueries that this runs, only unions. I think that
comment is using "subquery" loosely to mean "one of the queries in a
union". The docs say that UNION is available beginning in MySQL
4.0.0. What query gave an error?
