If it's configured for English, Unicode case folding may not be set up
properly, and it can corrupt some non-ASCII characters appearing at the
beginning of a title.
Set $wgLanguageCode appropriately in LocalSettings.php and it should
kick in the UTF-8 module. Let me know if that fixes things...
