It would use less bandwidth, yes, but it would take much longer to serve

More relevantly it uses a fraction of the costs. Given that we grow
exponentially and given that we do not have a healthy balance sheet,
this is extremely relevant. When the nodes that serve user requests are
close to the user, it will also mean that the Internet as a whole will
have less traffic. This is particularly relevant in countries where
access to the International backbone is a limiting factor.
With a decentralised infrastructure it is a sound strategy to have
trusted nodes in many countries. This will alleviate the problem even more.
