I think they're important lest we be confused with a gardening store. The allusion to the wiki syntax has always worked for me, and I've seen quite a few wikis create derivative works with something else between the brackets. (This is one reason why I insist that the logo should be free content.)
Are they they only way this can be done? Is [[image]] the only arrangement incorporating MediaWiki syntax with an image? Is MediaWiki the only wiki package that uses double square brackets? If we're discussing a new logo for the next version, it would seem worthwhile re-examining the entire thing from scratch?
I know I'm sounding negative here, but I'm not particularly taken with the new flower - always sort of liked the old one, asymmetry and all. :) Would like to hear what others think.
