Hello everyone,
We are looking for a senior full-stack developer to work with us as a
contractor on Scribe.
Scribe is a Wikimedia Foundation funded software and research project. We
are building a tool to support newcomer Wikipedia editors in creating new
articles in under-resourced languages (e.g. Arabic, Hindi). The project is
open-source and will be integrated on low-resource Wikipedias so you will
be working on a great cause of making knowledge accessible to everyone.
Plus your work will have great visibility and impact on the community.
*You:*
We are looking for a senior software engineer contractor to realize the
Scribe project in a part-time position for 9 months starting on the 14th of
October.
You will work remotely with us. We are looking for someone with *3+ years
of experience in Full-stack development and community-focused applications*.
*Your future team:*
The project leads are Lucie and Hady, researchers in Computer Science. So
you will be part of our three-person team and able to influence the project
itself.
Lucie is a PhD researcher at the University of Southampton and TIB
Hannover. She previously worked at Wikimedia Germany. Hady holds a PhD in
Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning and currently works as a
researcher in Naver Labs Europe. We live in France and Germany/UK
respectively, so we are used to working remotely and effective
communication.
*How to apply: *
*Make sure to read the full job description here:*
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Scribe/Job
Then drop us an email (scribe.wikimedia(a)gmail.com) showing your interest in
the project with your *CV* and *portfolio attached*.
We also appreciate *any other kind of information in any format* that shows
your relevant experience, creativity and problem-solving skills.
Note: Interviews will be scheduled on a first come first served basis until
the position gets filled, so please consider to submit your profile as soon
as possible.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Lucie-Aimée Kaffee and Hady Elsahar

Hello,
A couple of months ago I noticed there are considerable number of i18n
messages in mediawiki core that are not used in the code, it can happen
because you remove the code but you forget to remove the associated i18n
messages. This is not good as it puts unneeded work for our volunteer
translators. I started https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T224429 and I
would like anyone who has done some code in core to take a look at the
lists there and take action if they know what can be done for specific
group of i18n messages.
Sometimes it's not super easy because the i18n key might get lego'ed or
sometimes the code is moved to skins/extensions (like 'watchthispage' [1])
which means the i18n should be moved to extensions/skins first and then
removed from core.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I propose for Aryeh Gregor to be granted the right to approve changes against
MediaWiki core and extensions, by adding him to the mediawiki LDAP group.
Please voice support or concerns on
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T230979>
Aryeh has been contributing to MediaWiki on and off for a decade or so, both as
a volunteer and a contractor. He joined gerrit only a year ago, but he had
commit access already back in the day when MediaWiki was still managed on SVN.
In the time I have been working with Aryeh, he has shown excellent skill and
good judgement. Granting him merge rights would allow him to contribute not only
by writing code, but also by approving changes made by others.
Aryeh commented on the ticket to note the following:
> My older contributions are available via git log --author simetrical. I
> couldn't find a webpage that would display the results of the search that I
> could link to. Note that that includes things from the SVN era that I only
> committed and didn't author, so it's inflated (probably only slightly). But if
> we leave that aside, according to git shortlog -sne, I have 1052 commits (after
> updating .mailmap to merge the three different e-mail addresses I've used).
> Surprisingly, this still makes me the #19 all-time contributor by number of
> commits. I think I always tended to break up my commits more than a lot of
> people, though.

Hello,
The DockerSIG[0] meeting for this month is cancelled due to the agenda
being empty. Future DockerSIG meetings are still planned.
Please do email myself or reach out in other ways if you have something
you'd like to add to the agenda for our next session; even if it's a
request and not something you'd lead.
Best,
Greg

Hi all!
Tonight, TechCom will host a discussion about improving the RFC process on
#wikimedia-office, at 21:00 UTC (23:00 CEST, 2pm PDT).
This session is not about approving a specific proposal, but rather an
opportunity to explore options and gather ideas. We have been collecting
thoughts on this for a while, see <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T216308>.
If you have suggestions on how to improve the process, please join us!
