Hi everybody,
I just had a discussion with the GSoC program admin: Carols and
she said that the GSoC program for 2016 has been announced. Date of
announcement is: 13th Oct, 2015.
You can have a look at the news here for more information like the timeline
- Timeline: https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline
- Announcement: https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/
Will keep you all posted if i get to have any information about this
and up coming issues. Good luck to all prospective GSoC participants.
Its on and hoping to see what Wiki will do this time around :)

I've written about my problem ~2 years ago:
http://wikitech-l.wikimedia.narkive.com/6G0YPmWQ/need-a-way-to-modify-text-…
It seems I've lost the latest message, so I want to answer to it now:

> file text into page content (with sql-backed search, you might maybe).
Why?? Aren't these also just the fulltext search backends? As I
understand they're much faster than sql-backed search engines. What
would prevent them to store file texts?
Personally I use Sphinx (http://sphinxsearch.com) with TikaMW, and of
course everything is fine.

This strikes me as a rather good idea, but I don't really know that much
about cirrussearch in the first place. Anyone know, or have any thoughts
on this?

Subject: [MediaWiki-l] An "advanced search" page for CirrusSearch?

CirrusSearch has so many wonderful keywords for advanced searching: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:CirrusSearch.
Has anybody created an "advanced" search form (a special page) that uses these wonderful options under the hood, to help less sophisticated users? That would make a great addition to MediaWiki. For example:
Enter your search terms:
Limit to category:
Limit to namespace: (dropdown)
Search page titles only (yes/no):
Approximate matching (on/off):
Search within wikitext source (on/off):
etc...
I looked on mediawiki.org but didn't see anything.
Thanks,
DanB

Hey, I've created https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T115414 to remove
$wgEnableAPI. Quoting the bug:
By now, MediaWiki is severely crippled without the API, with most of
interesting extensions relying on the API, it becomes more and more
problematic to disable it. Now it's probably fair to say that wikis that do
that are just shooting their own feet off for no good reason. Therefore, I
propose to officially declare that MW does not support working without the
API and remove this very setting.
Please state your opinions on this.

Yes, Andrew's talk was quite good. He and I recorded video at some of the
other sessions, including a SWOT analysis and visioning exercise regarding
Wikipedia culture, and a session about video on Wikipedia. Some of the
videos (Andrew's) came out better than others (mine) due to hardware issues
(my camera's video quality is mediocre although some of its stills are
pretty good). Andrew will hopefully post links to the videos after they're
uploaded.

For past research, try searching the Research Newsletter backissues,
i.e. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=spam&prefix=Research%…
For more recent info, try asking on
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wiki-research-l
For intelligent systems, I think this might be helpful. Start off with
this video: https://youtu.be/Hj7o5d-OEis?t=139
and then explore the links from
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Revision_scoring_as_a_service
Hope that helps.
