Both of these are in the incident report. First the monitor I was watching from our logserver to tell me it needs a rollback did not report this error adding a minute or two before the rollback started. We have other monitors that have been added in the past year that I should have been looking at as well. Second I reverted multiple patches from within gerrit (our code review tool) which takes too long when the site is down. I can only point to inexperience here, others who have previously taken our sites down informed me that the proper was is to revert is directly on the deployment server. Iv been deploying patches and to wmf for a couple years and have always in the past reverted through gerrit, but those didn't need the extra speedy recovery as the site was not down, it was only logging errors or some specific piece of functionality was not working. Going up another level comes to our deployment tooling specifically. RelEng is working on a project called scap3 which brings our deployment process closer to what you should expect from a top 10 website. It includes canary deployments (eg 1% of servers) along with a single command that undoes the entire deployment. Canary deployments allow to see an error before it is deployed everywhere, and a one command rollback operation would have likely brought the site back 3 to 4 minutes faster than how I reverted the patches. I did not link the scap3 portions as an actionable because, in my mind, that's not a single actionable thing. Scap3 is a major overhaul of our deploy process. Additionally this is already a priority in RelEng.

MediaWiki core tests failing? why?

Hello, I have tried to run our current MediaWiki tests using PHP 5.4 on a Gentoo machine against +/- git master: + git -C . log --oneline -1 5c63cce Merge "ApiQueryAllRevisions: Actually use 'start' and 'end'" + git -C vendor log --oneline -1 5efd7d7 Update OOjs UI to v0.12.12 + git -C skins/Vector log --oneline -1 9f5f333 Localisation updates from https://translatewiki.net. I have posted my php.ini to https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P2226 I am running PHPUnit 4.3.1; 3.x series crashes at some point. I am getting few interesting failures: - floating point format problems - various XMP XML metadata issues and few others. This looks to me like some environment problems (some library too old etc. etc.). Any hints where those come from? Ask yourself: * Does your documentation need improvements? * Do you have small, self-contained, "easy" bugs you'd love to get fixed? (Also see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Annoying_little_bugs ) * Do your old bugs welcome some testing? * Does your user interface have some small design issues? * Does the Outreachy/GSoC project you finished welcome small tweaks? * Would you enjoy helping someone port your template to Lua? * Does your gadget use some deprecated API calls? * Do you have some tasks that welcome some research? Google Code-In (GCI) will take place again in Dec+Jan: a contest for 13-17 year old students to provide small contributions to free software projects. And Wikimedia will apply again to take part in GCI! Unsure about quality of contributions and effort? Mattermost.org Not only does it look pretty cool, but I really, really like their community portal <http://forum.mattermost.org/t/welcome-to-mattermost-community-discussion/8>. It looks incredibly easy <http://www.mattermost.org/feature-requests/> to file bugs, submit feature requests, vote for and discuss existing feature requests, and find a features ready to accept volunteer contributions. I'm curious what others about it as a potential chat client* and as an open source project in general. Seems like it could be easy to evaluate, especially if we use our fancy new kubernetes infrastructure to spin up a container <https://github.com/mattermost/platform/blob/master/doc/install/Docker-Singl…> for one or more teams to try out. Thoughts? XSS warning for an image download

When I right-click on the image download link for File:Commodore_Grace_M._Hopper,_USN_(covered).jpg the download I get is only 269 bytes and it contains a 404 error in plaintext even though it's a jpg file. When I click on the image preview that's 480x600 pixels, I get an XSS warning from Noscript. All other images download ok for me. Any knowledge of what the issue is with this one file? Thanks, Pine

can't get git-review to work

Recently I upgraded my Mac to OSX 10.10.5 and upgraded a lot of other stuff in the process. But now I can't get git-review to work.
