Hi everyone,
due to a blocking bug in the installer of the latest release candidate, MW 1.23.0-rc.2, we decided to release another RC before the final version as soon as a patch is available and merged. This also means, the actual release of MW 1.23.0 will be delayed by one week. New release date is Wednesday, June 4th.
Best,
Markus
I've just undone the mistake I made almost 5 years ago getting FlaggedRevs
turned on for mw.org with no consensus[0].
The average review time was > 58 days.
There were over 50 pages pending review (I didn't bother paging)
The vast majority of edits are harmless/productive and don't need review.
You probably noticed me removing you from the editor and/or reviewer groups
since they're unused now. Since FlaggedRevs is gone you shouldn't notice any
net permission changes.

[0] I'm not joking. There was a thread where there was little/no consensus.
I
then went on IRC and asked Brion and he said sure.
Hi,
While working on implementing VERP for Mediawiki[1], Nemo pointed
to me, Tyler' recommendation[2] on shifting from PHP mailer to Swift
Mailer[3]. Quoting Tyler's words :
"PHPMailer has everything packed into a few classes, whereas Swift_Mailer
actually has a separation of concerns, with classes for attachments,
transport types, etc. A result of this is that PHPMailer has two different
functions for embedding multimedia: addEmbeddedImage() for files and
addStringEmbeddedImage() for strings. Another example is that PHPMailer
supports only two bodies for multipart messages, whereas Swift_Mailer will
add in as many bodies as you tell it to since a body is wrapped in its own
object. In addition, PHPMailer only really supports SMTP, whereas
Swift_Mailer has an extensible transport architecture, and multiple
transport providers. (And there's also plugins, and monolog integration,
etc".
My mentors too think about it to be a nice idea, and Nemo
recommended adding it to my GSoC project deliverable here (
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/VERP#Deliverables ). But, we need more
community-consensus on the same as this needs to be done first, and VERP as
a plugin to it, if Swift mailer needs to be done. I have opened a BZ ticket
for the same ( https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=63483 ).
Please comment to this thread or in the BZ regarding the shift as it needs
to be done for a start. The discussions we had on this till date is here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:VERP#Swift_Mailer_and_VERP__40928.

*The annual SEMANTiCS conference*(formerly known as I-Semantics) is the
meeting place for professionals who make semantic computing work, and
understand its benefits and know its limitations. Every year, SEMANTiCS
attracts information managers, IT-architects, software engineers and
researchers from organisations ranging from NPOs, public administrations
to the largest companies in the world. Attendees learn from industry
experts and top researchers about emerging trends and topics in semantic
software, enterprise data, linked data & open data strategies and
methodologies in knowledge modeling and text & data analytics. The
SEMANTiCS community is highly diverse; attendees have responsibilities
interlinking areas like knowledge management, technical documentation,
e-commerce, big data analytics, enterprise search, document management,
business intelligence, and enterprise vocabulary management.
SEMANTiCS 2014 continues a long tradition of bringing together
colleagues from around the world to present best practices, panels,
papers and posters to discuss semantic systems in birds-of-a-feather
sessions and informal settings. SEMANTICS addresses problems common
among information managers, software engineers, IT-architects and
various specialist departments working to develop, implement and/or
evaluate semantic software systems.
The SEMANTiCS program is a rich mix of technical talks, panel
discussions of important topics, and presentations by people who make
things work - just like you. In addition, attendees can network with
experts in a variety of fields. These relationships provide great value
to organisations as they encounter subtle technical issues. The
expertise gained by SEMANTiCS attendees has a long-term impact on their
careers and organisations. These factors make SEMANTiCS the major
industry related event for our community.

*Preparing your presentation*
All accepted submissions will be granted a presentation slot of
*
*30 minutes*(25 min. Presentation + 5 min. Discussion).
Please stick to this time pattern when preparing your talk. This is the
only way we can guarantee a smooth and satisfying programme and allow
all conference participants to attend as many slots as possible without
missing important information.
*Please take care to address the following aspects in your talk:*
*
Initial Situation
/What kind of challenge did you face in the beginning oft the project?
What problems were needed to be solved?/
*
Approach and IT-Solution
/Which approach and methodology has been chosen to tackle the
problem(s)? How is your solution composed with respect to technological
aspects / human aspects / organisational aspects? How do the semantic
components support the process from data to knowledge?/
*
Success Criteria for / Benefit of the Semantic Solution
/Which factors (conscious and unconscious) have been crucial to the
success of your project? Which obstacles did you face? How can you
measure the benefit of your solution? How does the organisation benefit
from your solution?/
*
Prospects and Recommendations
/What are the next steps planned in your project? Can you give
recommendations with respect to development / deployment of semantic
solutions within organisational / corporate settings?/
*
Demo
/Prepare a short demonstration of your tool / service./
In case your presentation will be accepted, we will provide you with
detailed information on organisational matters according to the
selection of submissions and conference participation (June 27, 2014).

*Your benefit*
Presenters will be granted access to the entire program of the SEMANTiCS
Conference (incl. all social events) at a reduced rate. Additionally,
presenters will have the possibility to discuss their contributions with
an interested audience and exchange ideas how semantic technologies can
be utilized for corporate and business needs more effectively and
successfully. Besides that, the *Industry Presentations at
SEMANTiCS*generate a high visibility within the Semantics Community and
allow you to meet interesting experts and extend your business network.
We are looking forward to your contribution!

Hello all,
We have a short downtime planned for the Wikimedia IRC server coming in
a couple weeks. This is irc.wikimedia.org, aka the IRC server that some
bots follow as a recent changes feed.
Why: We're moving the Wikimedia IRC service from the Tampa, FL
datacenter to the Ashburn, VA datacenter. The new server is already in
place and running. The downtime will just be people (bots) being kicked
from the old server and reconnecting to the new one.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi,
I am working on developing the Page Content Language selector for core as a
part of my GSoC project.
Me and my mentors had some discussions and came up with these ideas.
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:SPQRobin/Page_language
I would like to invite everyone give their ideas and/or comments regarding
the same.
You can add your comments here:

I was looking for a free (possibly open source) provider of automatic
translations for my open source application I am working on and quite
had troubles finding some. Then I realized we have a project called
"wiktionary" which could possibly (I was assuming it's open
dictionary) help me here, but I was quite disappointed as I couldn't
find any simple way to perform simple queries like:
translate "banana" from english to czech
I think that we could (maybe should in spirit of openness and
wikiness) have some wiki-based web application that would serve this
purpose - allow people query / translate simple words, but maybe even
whole phrases. If anyone could edit this, maybe it would grow up into
huge dictionary of all possible or frequent phrases that could be
easily translated to any language on world.
Do we already have anything like this?
