RELEASE-NOTES renaming vs. svn diff

My script to show me the diffs, svn diff -r BASE:HEAD RELEASE-NOTES|wdiff -d -3 I suppose will now have to be for i in $(ls -r RELEASE-NOTES-*|sed 2q) do echo $i diff: svn diff -r BASE:HEAD $i|wdiff -d -3 done in order to not have to be rewritten each time a version number changes. Hmmm.

Feedback on online communications around the Berlin hackathon (including remote participants)

Hi, I just posted the last post in our series on the Berlin hackathon on the tech blog: http://blog.wikimedia.org/2011/05/16/developers-go-home-after-productive-be… I'm particularly interested in hearing about how people here felt about the communications around and during the event (whether they attended in person or followed the event remotely): e.g. did you watch and/or participate in the live video feed, live note-taking, IRCing, tweeting, blogging, and did you find it useful. Setting up the live video feed isn't easy, and taking notes in real time is pretty time- and energy-consuming, but we can make efforts to continue to do it in the future, if it's worth it. We'd just like to know how useful it is. Thanks! -- Guillaume Paumier

secure not purging history pages

Hoping the hackathon is still running, or folks can discuss. Secure is pretty slow lately, day and night.... Sometimes, the revised articles don't show up for the non-logged-in, but that's easy to fix with &action=purge. I just have to remember to check after sessions. But lately, and fairly consistently, as I've checked the history to compare with Google's cache date (not logged-in), I've discovered an old history seems to be served. "&action=history&action=purge" doesn't fix it. Yeah, I've flushed my own local browser cache. That's not it. The only solution I've found is to log-in insecure, check the history, and then log out. Then, the history is up-to-date for non-logged-in. Why do we cache history?

Scheduled intermittent downtime on all Wikimedia projects on May 24

Dear all, The Wikimedia Foundation will be performing network maintenance on Tuesday, May 24 between 13:00 and 14:00 (UTC) (see other timezones on timeanddate.com: http://ur1.ca/49cl2 ). During the maintenance period, you may experience intermittent connection issues to Wikimedia Foundation websites, including wikipedia.org. We have been experiencing router networking issues (and as a direct result, latency issues) since last week. After much investigation, and temporary fixes, the Operations team decided to update the router software and tune the configuration. We apologize for the inconvenience. -- Guillaume Paumier

@font-face support for less-used scripts and maths

Some of the less common languages on Wikipedia use scripts which are not supported by default on most operating systems. In many cases, these scripts may be unavailable even to native speakers of that language. The same applies to mathematical fonts. For example, the following languages seem to use scripts currently not supported by the fonts installed by default on a MacBook running MacOS 10.6.7: bn, bpy, kn, ml, te, am, arc, dv, km, my, si, bug, got, lo, or, as, cu, ti Other operating systems may have even fewer scripts supported. However, all of these scripts appear to have Free font support, as shown by their all being rendered on my Linux box, after having installed a variety of Free Software fonts that are part of the Debian distribution [see note below]. As far as I can see, none of these appear to have significant font-shaping issues, with only the occasional glitch in some languages such as Oriya. This means that, on modern browsers with both @font-face and UTF-8 support, we should now be in a position to support all of these scripts, even if they are not supported by the user's installed fonts, by adding @font-face declarations for Free Software fonts supporting these scripts, and hosting these fonts on WMF servers. In addition, doing this for mathematical fonts would have immediate utility for all language versions of Wikipedia. cruise control is back!

Hello, During the Hackaton, hexmode gave me access to the Cruise Control server. I have fixed the build configuration to exclude long tests, it seems to be running again correctly: http://ci.tesla.usability.wikimedia.org/cruisecontrol/ I think the IRC notifications are still broken. -- Ashar Voultoiz

Referent list of wikis?

Do we have a referent list of wikis? Although it would be good to have the list of *all* Wikimedia wikis, just the list of content projects wikis would be fine. The page Complete list of Wikimedia projects [1] is not referent at all. It's not about the fact that it is on wiki, but exactly because of possibility that anyone can add whatever he or she thinks that it should be added. Just because of three letters code conflict between Swiss German and Albanian (als), I've realized that somebody listed Swiss German to have Wikinews edition (it is, actually, news portal at Wikipedia) and nobody bothered to remove it. If someone knows the right place where to find the referent list of wikis, please let me know. If such list doesn't exist, and if someone from tech staff could do something like "echo 'show databases' | mysql ...| grep "^wiki" > <some_public_file>" or so every 7 days (cron would be helpful) and give to me the location of that file, I could do the rest. Persistent lock wait timeout

Hello all, It's been a while since I've been by to mediawiki.org, and I find it quite interesting to find that I have 2,124 new messages! Wow! Unfortunately, I can't read them, because... ---- A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was: (SQL query hidden) from within function "User::invalidateCache". Database returned error "1205: Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction (10.0.6.49)". ---- Just thought I'd let you know. Getlets: Transcluding a file (for example, a README file on SVN) on a page (for example: MediaWiki:Extension) page

Hello, is there way similar to my Wikimania 2005 proposal of "Getlets" [1][2] - to transclude text content of a file denoted by a (if possible to limit: trusted) URL - if possible, after sanitizing the content of the file on MediaWiki pages ? Purpose: To avoid duplication of content, especially for documentation of extensions, I wish to transclude a README file from our SVN on a Mediawiki extension page or subpage such as http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:OpenID .
