We plan some server downtime On Saturday at 18:00 UTC
The wiki should be read-only during this time, with a backup from 3 days ago.
We'll put ariel, the new db server, in production. And we'll keep Suda as db slave server.

I've moved the updatedb cronjob from daily to monthly on coronelli,
browne, and maurus [squids]. These have lots o little files and it takes
a long time, heavily loading the machines all the while.

I've done so already. Thanks.

Subject says it all.
Currently (MediaWiki 1.3 beta 3) DIV is an allowed HTML tag, but SPAN is not allowed. Adding "span" to line 1528 of
Parser.php allows the end user to do things like:
<span class="reptile"> some text </span>
- assuming, of course, that someone with access to the css has defined class "reptile" already. Seems to work just fine.
Is this unsafe? Or something I can do happily?
Thanks

LS,
I have read many messages about changing en:wikipedia to the next
characterset. I would really love to see the nl:wiktionary changed. I
have some friends who speak Russian, Farsi and Armenian who are willing
to check the words I have at the moment. As I cannot create these words,
I am waitiing for the conversion..
As there are not that many people who will notice nl:wiktionary to be
off line for some time and as we have only 607 words and a lot of other
stuff, it should not take too long to change nl:wiktionary
Thanks.

Hello.
Can you explain me in a few words how Wiki engine performs full-text search in UTF-8
encoded articles?
This is a very important problem for me. I have a database in UTF-8. MySQL prior 4.1
doesn't support full-text search in UTF-8 text. Only alpha-version of mysql
4.1 is available at the moment. So I don't want to install it.
I tried to look for the answer in the Wiki sources. But I realized
that this would take a rather long time. The only thing I understood is
that search keys are somehow stored in the table 'searchindex'.
So can anyone tell me the basic idea how Wiki performs the fulltext search?
Thanks for your time.
Best regards,
Alexander Prudnikov.
Hi there,
I'm having two problems with my mediawiki installation.
1) The inplace install does not work. After I fill out all the fields
and hit "Install!" a new page appears. It reads:
* PHP 4.3.4 ok
* PHP server API is apache; ok, using pretty URLs (index.php/Page_Title)
* Have zlib support; enabling output compression.
* Found ImageMagick: /usr/bin/convert; image thumbnailing will be enabled if you enable uploads.
* Installation directory: /var/www/wiki2
* Script URI path: /wiki2
After that the page stops. There is no LocalSettings.php in the config
directory. This happens with both 1.2.4 and 1.2.6.
I managed to manually install a 1.2.4 version, but it is somewhat
borked.
2) The TeX support does not work. I compiled texvc and put it into
/var/www/wiki/math directory. Now I get the following error message,
when using the <math>-Tag:
PNG conversion failed; check for correct installation of latex, dvips, gs, and convert
All those programs are installed and known to work. When I run e.g.
./texvc tmp out '\Phi' iso-latin1
I have to C-d the program. It then writes some hashcode to stdout
(c571286850423e91db6d2802a4857bf03&Phi) and places some files in tmp.
The file texput.log reads:
This is TeX, Version 3.14159 (Web2C 7.4.5) (format=latex 2004.4.29) 15 JUN 2004 14:44
**tmp/15593_571286850423e91db6d2802a4857bf03.tex
! Emergency stop.
<*> tmp/15593_571286850423e91db6d2802a4857bf03.tex
End of file on the terminal!
Here is how much of TeX's memory you used:
3 strings out of 95854
52 string characters out of 1196101
44491 words of memory out of 1000001
3030 multiletter control sequences out of 10000+50000
3640 words of font info for 14 fonts, out of 500000 for 1000
14 hyphenation exceptions out of 1000
0i,0n,0p,1b,6s stack positions out of 1500i,500n,5000p,200000b,5000s
No pages of output.
I can manually compile the created tex file in tmp and it will show a
Phi symbol in gs, so I think that the problem lies within the mediawiki
source and not with my toolchain. This is with 1.2.4 as I couldn't
get 1.2.6 installed.
I'm on Debian unstable and do all my browsing with Konqueror.
Thanks for help,
Viktor

Now that the months have been translated and put in place I realized
that for Greek things are not really so simple!! I am sure other languages
have the same problems (Spanish?). The problem is that most nouns
in Greek take a different ending depending on the grammatical case
being used. So for example you cannot simply refer to June in all cases
the same way. The correct way of doing this in Greek is (note also the
accent change):
June -- (Iou'nios) -- (Iou'n.)
15 June -- (15 Iouni'ou) -- (15 Ioun.)
I give here the correct greek form in english characters and the
correcsping
abbreviation. What it amounts to is that you cannot then do for example
{{CURRENTMONTHDAY}}_{{CURRENTMONTH}}
since it will sound and look strange. This makes setting a calendar much
more
difficult than in the English language.
Can somebody offer a suggestion in solving this conditions?
I am interested in finding what others have done in similar situations.
Thankx
Andreas

Oh, no. There was a new special system page "Special:Allmessages". Now,
indeed, it disappeared.
