Unpaper is the tool to crop and otherwise prepare scans to be OCR'd. There was a new release the other day and the maintainer has several interesting posts. https://www.flameeyes.eu/projects/unpaper https://blog.flameeyes.eu/tag/unpaper

Could it be installed into ToolLabs? Is it already running there? I'd like to test it, but I presently can't work into a personal Linux environment. :-(

I think that there are better options to install in ToolLabs, like ScanTailor or Spreads, which actually have functions such as dewarping, which unpaper doesn't have. BTW, those tools can be tested in Windows or Mac.

There are always cases in which one does better than another. All of them can be installed; if you want to use one of those there, you can ask it.

It's not installed currently, but I see there is a package: http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/unpaper So you can ask, as usual: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Nova_Resource:Tools/Help#My_tool_requires_a_package_that_is_not_currently_installed_in_Tool_Labs._How_can_I_add_it.3F
I'd like to test it, but I presently can't work into a personal Linux environment. :-(
I always forget that one can survive without. ;-)
