I stumbled upon a PDF from a Nationa Library of Naples scan: https://github.com/rohit-dua/BUB/files/132335/Comedy_of_the_Mistake_By_Sir_J...
The usual ugly menace in the first page (arguably copyfraud) disappeared, instead I only see once sentence: «This is a reproduction of a library book that was digitized by Google as part of an ongoing effort to preserve the information in books and make it universally accessible», followed by logo, domain and QR code.
By the way, I'm still not sure of the answer to http://webapps.stackexchange.com/q/76234/55370

I think ignore it. Google isn't going to claim copyright. Imagine the fuss if they did.
If it became an issue, that would be the impetus for us to get a bot to replace these splash pages.
AND I will keep challenging Commons' deletions of PD books where the G splash page is used as a reason for deletion. If they wish to have that as a policy then do widespread discussion and show a broad consensus.
AND maybe BUB could do a page swap as part of its process???

Err, they do/did for ages. "Use these files for personal, non-commercial purposes". https://archive.org/stream/charlesdarwinsw03darwgoog#page/n0/mode/2up

BUB removes the first page, yes. It's the standard for Commons as well, although many don't bother.
