Not sure if all of you are aware of the newsletter that Wikimedia
foundation publishes about all indic wikis. You can have a loot at the
newsletter, called
WikiPatrika<http://wiki.wikimedia.in/WikiPatrika/2011-06/Community_News/gu>and
get an idea about what goe in it. It is a time to submit our site news
for the next issue, which is due to be published in April. I encourage you
all to share stories, news, stats that you would like to share with wider

has happened in last year's time.
So, lets all get going and start out thought process. If you would like to
report any news, please share it with me here, either on my email address
or with the whole mailing list, which will encourage other users to share
as well. depending upon response from you all, I may put up a temporary
page on gu.wiki to report. Meanwhile, wikimedia will be preparing the
template for us to put our final stories in.
Let us make this a community effort and show an example of our
extraordinary strength and unity among the Indic wikis.

Dhaval
Hi, yes ff course, we all know that. But when we speak about a few, we
speak about the major contributors.

Hi Arun/All,
Thanks for all of your appreciation. The request for gu.wikisource.org is
in its final stage. There is a bug filed already for the creation of it and
we expect its creation anytime soon.
With no discredit to anyone, but the people behind bringing the count to
1000 are User:Sushant savla <http://wikisource.org/wiki/User:Sushant_savla>,
User:Ashok Modhvadia <http://wikisource.org/wiki/User:Ashok_modhvadia> &
User:Vyom25 <http://wikisource.org/wiki/User:Vyom25> (if I am not
mistaking) in order of their recent contributions in addition to other
contributors including myself. User:Yann is inactive insce September 2011,
while the majority of this work from is done since November.
We have mainly started adding poems (including religious ones, Bhajans) and
of course as Kondi stated Stories, biographies, history and other
literature. However, our majority count is Bhajans. Also in addition to
Kabir, we have few more notable Gujarati Poets' almost majority poetic
creations added in Gujarati, these being, Narasinh Mehta (65) (who is
regarded as Adi Kavi of Gujarati), Akho (23), Gangasati (53), Zaverchand
Meghani (62), Mirabai (124).. and the list continues. Second larget type of
content there after Bhajan/Poems is Lokageet (Falksongs). There is Bhagawad
Gita and Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography are underway.
We had set up our first aim to bring the count to 1000 on Holi, 18th March,
and unfortunately we missed the goal by almost 10 days. Our next goal now
is, as Sushant stated in his original message, to complete a first complete
book there.
Thanks Arun for your suggestion to link Kabir's work with Hindi text and
English source. I will be doing it straightaway.
You all are welcome to contribute there.
Regards,
Dhaval

Hi,
First of all please accept my apologies for the delay in replying to this.
I started the online meetup from the begining of this new year. Our very
first such event was planned for the new year day. I had total 5
confirmations, considering a small community of Gujarati Wikipedians this
was relatively a large number. As it happened with you, we had 2 unexpected
drop outs, 1 user confirmed just before the start of conference that due to
the loss of power supply at his side, he wasn't able to join, 1 user
replied a couple of days back that he had to travel due to emergency and
hence, I ended up with just 1 user online for the session. This person had
made special efforts to join the session despite having guests waiting for
her. We discussed some of the dos and don'ts for the Wikipedia, and some
other question/answers.
With this mixed response, I was initially disapointed a bit, but when I
received other's responses for not being able to join it and willingness to
join future sessions, we decided to carry on with the online sessions once
every month, and fixed up to have it every first sunday of Month. We had 3
more sessions since, 1 in Feb & 2 in March, as some users were nnot
comfortable with either first or second Sunday in March. We had 4 attendees
in Feb meetup, with 1 busy with other tasks at the same time, so didn't
participate in discussion actively. March sessions were also having me plus
2 more users. We discussed mainly the isses related to gu.wikipedia. In
last meeting we even decided to take up a project of clearing up some
articles, and all three of us choose 1 article each to work on. When we
have our next meeting in April, we will be reporting the progress of our
tasks and based on the experience, we will be taking up more projects.
To me and to the users who joined these, they seems to be quite helpful.
Looking forward to have more users joining it and ways to spread them to
make them the outreach events at the same time.
Instead of having IRC Chats, we decided to have skype as it is more
userfriendly and can have voice conf as well. You all are invited to join
our next event in April, on the 1st April at 11 am IST. If you are joining,
join us on skype username gu.wikipedia.

Dhaval

Hi Swaroop,
This is quite common phenomenon for the new beginings. I have started
online meetups/sessions for Gujarati Wikipedia since the begining of this
new Year. Have held 4 sessions so far. Had similar experience in my
firstever planned event. Users are showing interest, and I am sure, if we
continued it as a regular event, people will be regular to attend as well.
Those who couldn't join the meetups/events online, have shared their
apologies and have regreted for it, which shows that they genuinely missed,
and that is enough for me to carry it on.
Simply wanted to say that you are doing a nice job, please "Keep Calm and
Carry On". People will join and number of participants will increase slowly.
All the best!

FYI friends!
So far so good that we take most of the decisions on gu.wiki jointly, all
with community consensus. That is a healthy practice. We have seen in
recent voting that hardly a half of this mailing list took part in the
voting on new logo. If you want to avoid this same happening to Gujarati,
those who are active on the wikipedia, are necouraged to participate
actively in debates. Lets all pray together that Gujarati wikipedia or any
of the Gujarati projects don't see such days.
Regards,
Dhaval

Interesting.. Thanks Jyothis & Theo for sharing this.
It is sad to see that a very inportant Wikipedia like Hindi-wiki is in such
a huge mess. Such issues occur when the communities are not strong & big
enough, which results in a few individuals having a free run. This is also
an important lesson for the newly emerging language Wikipedias, something
that needs to be watchful for.
