It's with immense gratitude that we acknowledge the remarkable progress and connections we've forged within our community. We extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you. Your commitment, creativity, and collaborative spirit have elevated our shared mission, enriching the Wikimedia landscape and fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing and inclusivity. ** 2023 Wikimedia Community Ireland Highlights ------------------------------------------------------------ As we approach the year's end, we're excited to reminisce and celebrate some of the incredible highlights that have defined our journey together. From changes and transitions to inspiring collaborations, these moments remind us of the collective strength and potential within our community. 2023 has been a year of change for our group. We hired our first Irish Language Officer, Amy O'Riordan, to improve our outreach in Irish, our long time Project Coordinator, Rebecca O'Neill, stepped down, and we hired a new Programme Manager, Sophie Fitzpatrick. What I am most proud of this year is how, even with all of this change, we still had another year of successful programs. Amy has contributed immensely to the Wiki Women Erasmus+ project, which will, by the end of 2024, provide school and student toolkits for editing Wikipedia in Irish for the first time. Sophie has hit the ground running, expanding our outreach on social media platforms and running several successful online editing campaigns. I look forward to another year of innovative programs to bring the sum of all knowledge to everyone in Ireland in both English and Irish! -Shannon Co-Chairperson For me, the best news this year was the appointment of Amy O'Riordan as Oifigeach Gaeilge le Pobal Wikimedia na hÉireann. Nollaig shona! -Éamonn (Ériugena) Irish Language Editor The WikiWomen Erasmus+ Project (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) initiative to address the under-representation of women on Wikipedia and to elevate minority languages in the digital space with the development of the educational toolkits (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) certainly was a major focus of 2023. But, the keystone event for me was the welcoming of Amy, our first Irish Language Officer at Wikimedia Community Ireland. With this expansion of our team we continue to push into new areas and expand our community presence. I remain encouraged with the community feedback that our focus be on supporting the good work done on Vicipéid. I think it is important to focus on Irish content in the Irish Language. The encyclopedia projects are the first destination for the vast majority of students performing academic research. It is important that local knowledge is available without the filters of translation. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female; more recent research 2013 Benjamin Mako Hill survey points to 16% globally and 22% in the US. The data relative to trans and non-binary editors is basically non-existent. That's a big problem. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: gaps in participation create gaps in content. Let's change that! Among them, was a powerful photograph (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) taken at Phoenix Park in Dublin Ireland by MetAddyOliver. The photo won a special prize in the “Human Rights and Environment” category that accepted images capturing the impact of human activity on the environment. This year the Wiki Loves Earth (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) International photo contest supported the initiative #Wiki4HumanRights (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) , in partnership with the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).  Its goal was to raise awareness of nature protection and human impacts on nature. The photo portrays how environmental pollution threatens biodiversity worldwide. Supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media and Mná 100, the seminar aimed to enhance the visibility of Irish women scientists, scholars, authors and others by bringing together archival practitioners, librarians, historians, and other stakeholders to discover, discuss and disseminate women's archival collections. The seminar included discussions about ‘The Playwright on the Stairs: Recovering Archival Loss of Irish Women Theatre-Makers’ with Dr Barry Houlihan, Archivist (University of Galway Library Archives), 'Using the archives to write histories of queer female sexualities in Ireland' with Dr Mary McAuliffe, Director of Gender Studies (University College Dublin) and 'Her voice, through the works of Cartoon Saloon'with Nora Twomey, Co-founder of Cartoon Saloon. Notably, the event was held on the 105th anniversary of Irish women over the age of 30 exercising their right to vote (https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…) in a general election for the first time. The Celtic Knot is back ------------------------------------------------------------ We are delighted to announce that after several years of online conferences, the Celtic Knot Conference is back and will take place again in person! We are thrilled to host the conference in Waterford City this coming year. The dates, yet to be determined, will likely be in mid-September to mid-October 2024. The Celtic Knot Wikimedia Languages Conference aims to bring people together to share their experiences of working on sharing information in minority and minoritised languages. Our aim is to help people learn how to direct the flow of information across language barriers and support their communities. Celtic Knot is coming to Waterford in 2024/ Community Survey

Dia Duit! We are very happy to announce that the Celtic Knot Conference will be back for its 7th edition in the new year! We are delighted that it will be hosted in *Waterford City, Ireland, in September 2024*. The exact date will be announced as soon as possible. The Celtic Knot is a conference dedicated to minoritized languages on the Wikimedia projects, including Irish. Getting back to its roots, in the Celtic languages and nations, the event gathers people from communities and *languages that are underrepresented on the Wikimedia projects*. It is a place where people working on growing and maintaining their communities can meet, learn from each other, and support each other on topics like community growth, technical tools, or collaboration with partners. Celtic Knot 2024 <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Celtic_Knot_Conference_2024>, will be an in-person event, held in Waterford, Ireland's oldest city which has an abundance of cultural heritage and history. We are currently exploring options to make conference resources (talks, panels, etc.) available to those who are unable to attend in person. We are currently gathering input from the community to build a conference tailored to your needs: whether you attended a previous edition of the Celtic Knot or not, if you are involved in underrepresented languages on the Wikimedia Projects, please *take a few minutes to fill in the community survey <https://wikimedia.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_erCHFhEJyzrO46i>*, and make sure to share the information with your local group. *Winter Greetings from Wikimedia Community Ireland!* November marks a time of transition with the anticipation of festive celebrations ahead. As the winter chill washes over our island and the year draws to a close, we find ourselves starting to reflect on the year gone by but by no means slowing down! Join us as we delve into the latest updates, achievements, and upcoming events in our vibrant community. Wikimedia Community Ireland was delighted to host the Wiki Women Erasmus+ Partners meeting at the end of October. We were joined by partners from Monaghan, San Sebastien in the Basque region of Spain, and Friesland in the Netherlands. WikiWomen addresses many imminent challenges: the need for digital skills and literacy, the position of Europe’s smaller and minority languages, the need for multilingualism to be mainstreamed across school curricula, and the importance of gender equality, not only in society but also in the information we access. Dublin Port kindly provided a space for the meeting to take place. Discussions about teaching materials and GLAMs Toolkits took place overlooking vistas of Dublin’s Docklands, the Liffey, and the distant Dublin mountains. On the second day, the partners made important plans for the Basque and Frisian Wikithons taking place in 2024. The partners left feeling inspired and motivated by the discussions, eager to get to work on the plans. A huge thanks to all of our partners for joining us in Dublin and to Dublin Port for being such amazing hosts! An Nuacht is Déanaí In this section, we will the latest news (An Nuacht is Déanaí )from hear from Amy, our Irish language officer. Amy was very busy this November! She was lucky enough to attend the Oireachtas na Samhna <https://www.antoireachtas.ie/> at the beginning of the month in Killarney. This is a festival that provides a platform for traditional arts and plays an important role in Irish cultural life bringing people from Gaeltacht areas and Irish speakers from non-Gaeltacht areas together. She got to meet a member of the Wikimedia Community, Éamonn an active editor on Vicipéid and attended various seminars. It was a great chance to make connections with people who are really interested in Wikipedia, our Erasmus+ project, and keen to collaborate with them in the New Year. Get involved to help us achieve our goal of increasing the visibility of Irish women in STEM on Wikipedia. Anyone can participate at any time! Stuck for ideas? For example, Dr. Kathleen Lynn <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathleen_Lynn> (28 January 1874 – 14 September 1955), born in Mayo, was a doctor and activist deeply involved in the Irish Citizen Army. She played a vital role in the 1916 rising by providing first-aid training to the members and Cumann na mBan. Notably, she used her car to transport guns into Dublin before the Rising, even housing some in her own home. Lynn assumed the role of Chief Medical Officer for the Irish Citizen Army. She was stationed at City Hall, offering medical aid to the wounded. However, the British forces recaptured the position on Easter Monday. Subsequently, Lynn was arrested and detained in Ship Street, Richmond Barracks, Kilmainham, and Mountjoy Gaols. Digitized versions of her original diaries have been made fully available online <https://heritage.rcpi.ie/Projects/Dr-Kathleen-Lynn>by The Royal College of Physicians Ireland Heritage Centre. These span from Easter Monday 1916, until her death in 1955 and could be a great source of new information to add to her Wikipedia page as part of the Science Month Editathon. Stuck for time? Wikimedia Community Ireland is calling upon amateur, professional, and aspiring photographers with a love of science to take photos and upload them to Wikimedia Commons. UCD Editathon This week our chairperson Shannon and valued community member Rebecca, hosted an in-person editathon with undergraduate and postgraduate students at Univedsity College Dublin as part of our Education and Outreach work. This provided the students with the opportunity to put the finishing touches on their Wikipedia biographies they have been busy learning to edit over the semester. The editathon included lots of hands-on demonstrations on adding images, fixing citations, and publishing their work. The informal environment made it easy for the students to ask for help and feel more confident publishing their work on Wikipedia. The event was a roaring success with lots of biographies of Directors of the National Library of Ireland updated and edited. Monthly meetings Last week we held our final Community Meeting of the year, as we will take a break for the business of December. If you want to get more involved with the group next year, just let us know and you can come along to the first meeting of 2024 in January. Online Editathon for Science Week Invitation to Participate

Our virtual cauldron is bubbling with exciting updates and developments including the addition of our new Irish language feature! Wiki Loves Monuments Judges/ Wiki Science The entries are in and we are currently in the process of judging Wiki Loves Monuments <https://wikimedia.ie/programme/wiki-loves-monuments/> 2023. We have some esteemed judges helping us to find a winner this year including Christine Grant archaeologist at the National Monuments Service, Lorna Elms Development Officer at the Irish Community Archive Network, and Martin Cregg, an Irish photographer and Coordinator of Photography at Pearse College of Further Education in Dublin. CC BY-SA 4.0 Wiki Women Erasmus+ Partners Meeting The community has been very busy planning and prepping in anticipation of the upcoming WikiWomen Erasmus+ Partners Meeting set to take place in Dublin at the end of October. The WikiWomen Erasmus+ Project <https://www.wikiwomen.eu/about-us> seeks to address the underrepresentation of women on Wikipedia and to elevate minority languages in the digital space. The project brings together schools, Wikipedia foundations, and language organisations in Europe to use Wikipedia as a tool to teach digital literacy, social engagement, and language skills. The project aims to teach students in minority language communities how to write Wikipedia articles in their own languages about women who are not represented in the online encyclopedia. This means that students are actively engaging with their minority language to showcase how women have shaped the world around us. At the meeting, the partners will discuss the educational toolkits <https://www.wikiwomen.eu/results> that have been developed over the course of the project and how to use Wikipedia as a tool to teach digital literacy, social engagement, and language skills. Celebrating Maths Week 2023 ⚖️🧮🧩It's Maths Week! Ireland has seen some remarkable women who've made significant contributions to the world of mathematics, such as Sheila Power <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheila_Tinney#> (later Tinney). Sheila, a UCD graduate, earned her PhD in quantum mechanics in just two years at the age of 23 under the guidance of Nobel laureate Max Born at Edinburgh. In a pioneering move, Sheila became one of the first three resident scholars at the newly established Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies, initiated by then Taoiseach Eamon de Valera. Some incredible women have paved the way for generations of mathematicians and continue to inspire us with their achievements. Let's celebrate their contributions to the world of mathematics and encourage more young minds to follow in their footsteps. 📚🌟 Dublin-born Sophie Willock (later Bryant, 1850-1922 was the first woman in Britain and Ireland to be awarded a DSc (in mental and moral science) and the first woman to have a paper published in the Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society. Is Wikipedia Reliable? Over the last couple of weeks, we have been collaborating with Universities (UCD and UL) to train students on editing Wikipedia pages. These sessions have turned out to be a two-way knowledge exchange with some fruitful Q&A sessions. One recurring question that came up was Is Wikipedia reliable? It’s widely accepted that Wikipedia doesn't always have the best reputation here. But is this warranted? Is information inaccurate? Does vandalism happen? This month on the Wikimedia Ireland website we attempted to discuss this question and dispel some of the myths.
