** Nollaig Shona Daoibh! Happy Christmas to You All!
------------------------------------------------------------
As the year draws to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on the incredible journey
we've shared in 2023. It's with immense gratitude that we acknowledge the
remarkable progress and connections we've forged within our community.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you. Your commitment, creativity,
and collaborative spirit have elevated our shared mission, enriching the Wikimedia
landscape and fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing and inclusivity.
** 2023 Wikimedia Community Ireland Highlights
------------------------------------------------------------
As we approach the year's end, we're excited to reminisce and celebrate some of
the incredible highlights that have defined our journey together. From changes and
transitions to inspiring collaborations, these moments remind us of the collective
strength and potential within our community.
2023 has been a year of change for our group. We hired our first Irish Language Officer,
Amy O'Riordan, to improve our outreach in Irish, our long time Project Coordinator,
Rebecca O'Neill, stepped down, and we hired a new Programme Manager, Sophie
Fitzpatrick. What I am most proud of this year is how, even with all of this change, we
still had another year of successful programs. Amy has contributed immensely to the Wiki
Women Erasmus+ project, which will, by the end of 2024, provide school and student
toolkits for editing Wikipedia in Irish for the first time. Sophie has hit the ground
running, expanding our outreach on social media platforms and running several successful
online editing campaigns. I look forward to another year of innovative programs to bring
the sum of all knowledge to everyone in Ireland in both English and Irish!
-Shannon Co-Chairperson
For me, the best news this year was the appointment of Amy O'Riordan as Oifigeach
Gaeilge le Pobal Wikimedia na hÉireann. Bhuail mé le hAmy don chéad uair i mbliana ag an
Oireachtas i gCill Airne, agus tá súil agam go mbeidh deis agam bualadh léi le haghaidh
caife agus comhrá san athbhliain. Guím gach rath uirthi, agus ar ndóigh más féidir liom
aon chúnamh a thabhairt di níl le déanamh aici ach ceist a chur orm!
B’fhéidir go mbeadh fonn ar ‘Wikimedia UK’ í a fhostú chun Tuaisceart Éireann a chlúdach
chomh maith! Nollaig shona!

initiative to address the under-representation of women on Wikipedia and to elevate

certainly was a major focus of 2023. But, the keystone event for me was the welcoming of
Amy, our first Irish Language Officer at Wikimedia Community Ireland. With this expansion
of our team we continue to push into new areas and expand our community presence. I remain
encouraged with the community feedback that our focus be on supporting the good work done
on Vicipéid. I think it is important to focus on Irish content in the Irish Language. The
encyclopedia projects are the first destination for the vast majority of students
performing academic research. It is important that local knowledge is available without
the filters of translation. I'm excited to continue to accelerate our impact into the
new year.

Dia dhaoibh a dhaoine uaisle! Toisc go bhfuil deireadh na bliana ag teacht anois, seo iad
mo chuid machnaimh ar 2023. Ó mhí Iúil, nuair a thosaigh mé sa phost seo. d'aimsigh mé
cuar céar foghlama ach ag an am céanna grúpa pobail a raibh (agus a bhfuil) cairdiúil agus
cuidiúil. Táim fíorbhuíoch as bhur gcuid cabhair! Ba é an t-Oireachtas buaicphointe an
bhliain domsa, mar tá alán suim ag daoine faoi Vicipéid agus ar Wiki na mBan chomh mhaith,
agus nascanna déanta le haghaidh imeachtaí agus píosaí oibre a dhéanamh. Táim aag suil go
mór leis an Athbhliain agus na himeachtaí atá ag teacht! Ba é tionscadal Wiki na mBan
buaic eile ó 2023, tá an-cuid déanta againn agus níos mó le déanamh. Beidh seoladh an
tionscadal ag an gcomhdháil Celtic Knot an bhliain seo chugainn. Bheinmis buíoch dá
bhféadfadh daoine a chur in iúl dúinn cad atá uaibh don imeacht sin agus an suribhé a
líonadh amach. Beannachtaí na féile chuid gach duine agus feicfidh mé sibh i 2024!

** Art+Feminism
------------------------------------------------------------
Keep an eye out in January, as WCI will be taking part in the global Art+Feminism
(
https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…)
Campaign.
In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors
identify as female; more recent research 2013 Benjamin Mako Hill survey points to 16%
globally and 22% in the US. The data relative to trans and non-binary editors is basically
non-existent. That's a big problem. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for
debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: gaps in participation create gaps
in content. Let's change that!

** HER-ald: HER archives, literature, documents
------------------------------------------------------------
On December 14th our Irish Language Officer, Amy attended the Her-ald: HER archives
(
https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…)
, literature, documents event at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin. Supported by the
Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media and Mná 100, the seminar
aimed to enhance the visibility of Irish women scientists, scholars, authors and others by
bringing together archival practitioners, librarians, historians, and other stakeholders
to discover, discuss and disseminate women's archival collections.
The seminar included discussions about ‘The Playwright on the Stairs: Recovering Archival
Loss of Irish Women Theatre-Makers’ with Dr Barry Houlihan, Archivist (University of
Galway Library Archives), 'Using the archives to write histories of queer female
sexualities in Ireland' with Dr Mary McAuliffe, Director of Gender Studies (University
College Dublin) and 'Her voice, through the works of Cartoon Saloon'with Nora
Twomey, Co-founder of Cartoon Saloon.
Notably, the event was held on the 105th anniversary of Irish women over the age of 30
exercising their right to vote
(

in a general election for the first time. The event was of particular interest to

which is coming up in January.
** Save the date! The Celtic Knot is back
------------------------------------------------------------
We are delighted to announce that after several years of online conferences, the Celtic
Knot Conference is back and will take place again in person! We are thrilled to host the
conference in Waterford City this coming year. The dates, yet to be determined, will
likely be in mid-September to mid-October 2024.
The Celtic Knot Wikimedia Languages Conference aims to bring people together to share
their experiences of working on sharing information in minority and minoritised languages.
Our aim is to help people learn how to direct the flow of information across language
barriers and support their communities.
If you are involved in underrepresented languages on the Wikimedia Projects, please help
us design the program by filling out the community survey
(
https://wikimedia.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540c4c8809c070a478ba39…)
by January 21st.

new year!
** Monthly Meetings
------------------------------------------------------------
If you want to get more involved with the group next year, just let us know and you can
come along to the first meeting of 2024 in January. We meet once a month on Zoom (usually
a Tuesday at 7 pm) when we discuss and plan our events and campaigns, just email
info(a)wikimedia.ie to join.
Thank you for being an integral part of Wikimedia Community Ireland. Here's to a
wonderful conclusion to this year and to the promising opportunities that await us in the
times ahead.
Nollaig shona daoibh go léir agus athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibh – Happy Christmas to you
