imho it is too early to consider friendly society, limited company, registered
charity
or any other status
first, let us see if there is sufficient interest
I'm remembering last time: only three showed up
So, pick a date (Sept18?); pick a location; lets see - then consider corporate
status

Dear Darius and Louise,
I am contacting you in relation to your work with Creative Commons Ireland -
Wikimedia Ireland [ http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Ireland ]
is in the beginning stages of formation and we were wondering if
either or both of you would like to participate.
My own particular interests are to help increase the amount of music
(and general media) in the commons and to encourage educators to use
more free, collaboratively-generated materials in their courses.
After gathering 10-20 people to form an Irish Wikimedia chapter, we
would like to establish a legal structure (as a charity or company -
undecided) in Ireland. We could then apply for funding and host
educational events promoting a more sharing approach to media, etc.
If this sounds like something that interests you, please contact
myself or the Wikimedia Ireland mailing list
(wikimediaie(a)lists.wikimedia.org - cc'd in this email).
Kind Regards,
Conor Wao.

In England there are two types of companies - limited by guarantee or limited by shares. Wikimedia UK is incorporated as limited by guarantee and this is the normal route for "non-profits".
Limited companies cost around £1000 per year in admin costs - statutory accounts, incorporation fees etc. I would suggest you don't rule out a simple unincorporated association if you aren't expecting income to be too great in the initial years and are happy to run the liability risks.
But as someone else said earlier - most important thing is to get the critical mass of interested members who are willing to put the effort into setting it up.

Ours are all available on our wiki at http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Constitution and you're welcome to cut and paste if you want! I don't know how different English and Irish company and charity law are - wouldn't be surprised if they were very similar, but I'm afraid it's not really my area of experience or expertise.
Regards,
Hi all,
Not certain if there's been crossed wires on this, but I'm Irish, live in Dublin and have family in Cork, so I don't really have expenses as such connected with a meetup in either place :) Regarding the meetup itself, 4th September won't work for me as I'll be away, and the 11th is looking unlikely to work out due to a disaster recovery simulation at work, but most Saturdays after that should be fine.
I remain available as a media contact and am still (quite heavily) active on OTRS, but I don't think I would be much good with a Q&A on Wikimedia UK, as I am but an inactive member thereof :)

Hi All,
I am interested in getting the Irish chapter up and running. I have a
particular interest in releasing more music into the commons. I would like
to apply for funding to provide educational workshops and demonstrations.
Have we got enough people who are interested enough to get going?
Kind Regards,
Conor Wao.
Hi Conor,
Irish chapter would be a fantastic move and please let us know if there's anything we could do to support you in this - including any practical or financial help you might need to get started.
Just to let you know I was on a Dublin radio show last year talking about Wikipedia (WM-UK were the closest contact listed) - they seemed to have a very positive impression of Wikipedia.
We have talked about setting up a branch in Northern Ireland if/when we get a significant number of members there and would be great to cooperate on things. There are plenty of North-South funds available, particularly for language support and would be fantastic to put in for these to support Irish language Wikimedia projects.
Please get in touch if you need anything and good luck!
