*Academia and Wikipedia: Critical Perspectives in Education and Research*
This conference, the first of it's kind in Ireland, will be taking place in
Maynooth, 18 June 2018. The call for papers is currently open, and will

#1lib1ref (one librarian, one reference) is an international initiative to
encourage librarians and information professionals to improve Wikipedia by
adding just one citation. It runs from 15 January to 3 February 2018, and

Art+Feminism will be returning in March 2018. Last year Ireland held one
event in Galway, and this year we aim to build on that. Are you interested

Simple APG Grant Report-SE and RO had a meeting with WMF about the
mid-point grant report. Some changes need to be made to the layout and the
project stories. It was also recommended that the contests section be
changed to outreach. SE and RO will work on the changes over the next few
weeks and bring it back to the group for approval.

Project Coordinator Update (RO)

UCD Workshop-11 October-the workshop went well. The class is working
on articles on Irish WOmen. The follow up workshop is on November.

Train the Trainer-NUIG-4 Irish speakers attended the workshop. They
were shown how to use Vicipéid including the newly added Sandbox. Looking
into improving the citation tool and the translation dashboard.

Meeting with DRI about 30 November workshop-the event is in
conjunction with TCD and RIA. The focus will be on obsolete file formats.
TCD has a recently donated collections of old computers that may be
available for the workshop. RO, SE and EE will attend.

Open Street Map meeting-21 Ocotober 11-4 at TOG-they are looking to
form a User Group. RO will attend.

TOG editing event on 25 October in conjunctions with European Maker
Day.

Wiki Awareness Workshop-NUIG-20 October-SF will be running the 2nd
annual Wiki Awareness workshop at NUIG. As part of it they will be
uploading images to Wikimedia COmmons. 14 members of staff are currently
registered

Wiki Science-November-landing page is live. The Science Gallery, Science
Foundation of Ireland and Women in Science, Technology and STEM (WITS) will
promote it. The prizes are donated by the Designists. There is a possible
workshop for the contest in TOG during Science Week.

Wikipedia Conference-NUI Maynooth-June 2018-BM spoke to Dean of Teaching
and Learning who has agreed to sponsor a conference on Wikipedia. It will
be a one day conference focused on research into WIkipedia and it’s use in
Third Level education. The call for papers will go out in November. SF and
RO will help choose the papers. Currently 7 teachers in Maynooth are using
Wikipedia.

Jimmy Wales was on The Pat Kenny Show on Monday morning discussing the threats to online knowledge-sharing and his mission to combat the rise of ‘fake news’ with evidence-based journalism via his new site WikiTRIBUNE. Launching later this year, WikiTRIBUNE is a collaborative online news publication that allows professional journalists and volunteers to work side by side, co-researching and co-writing articles together. Mr Wales will be discussing this and more at Ireland's Internet Day. The event will be moderated by Adrian Weckler (Technology Editor at the Irish Independent) and will also include a Q&A session where Jimmy Wales will answer selected questions from the audience via Twitter.
Wikipedia is the 5th most visited site in the world and Jimmy will give his perspective on what’s next in the digital era. Don’t miss one of the titans of the internet have his say on the issues impacting the internet today.

We are very excited to announce that Ireland will be taking part in Wiki
Science <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Science_Ireland_2017>
for the first time this year. Wiki Science is a photo competition looking
for images under 5 broad categories relating to science: people in science,
microscopy images, non-photographic media, image sets, and a general
category. In Ireland we will also be awarding a sixth prize for an image of
Women in STEM. We will be announcing more details over the coming weeks,
and if you have any suggestions, thoughts or ideas on this exciting
initiative do get in contact!

*Wiki Loves Monuments 2017*
Thank you and good luck to everyone who entered this year's competition.
Ireland was ranked 37 out of the 52 participating countries with 851
uploaded images by 50 uploaders. We are busy organising the judging of the
pictures and the awards event. Stay tuned to here the results by the start
of November!

*Wiki Loves Monuments 2017*
As many of you will have seen, Ireland’s Wiki Loves Monuments was launched
at Archaeo Fest as part of Heritage Week. This year Ireland’s monuments can
be viewed through Monumental <https://maps.wikilovesmonuments.org/>, as all
of our data is now on Wikidata! You can search by county, see what
monuments have no photo, or if they have an article. Do spread the word to
your photography friends and family. You can find all the information at

On Tuesday 5 September, we had our first joint event
<http://dri.ie/dri-and-wikimedia-ireland-exploring-cc-licences> with the
DRI in the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin. The workshop looked at Creative
Commons and Public Domain licencing, in particular for those who work in
cultural institutions. It also covered issues around Orphan Works, and the
new EU Directive on Copyright. The next event with the DRI will be in
October, and will focus on how cultural institutions can collaborate with
Wikipedia and its sister projects.
