Hi all - just wanted to introduce myself... some of you I probably
already know.
Looking forward to reading up on the goings-on of Wikimania, and
assisting with the media/communications piece for the event.
We've already had quite a bit of preliminary interest from media.
If anyone's got specific background in this area, or if we have current
media reps for Alexandria, please feel free to drop me a note.
Thanks!

Hello,
I have a couple of ideas to communicate to the WM 08 organisers, I
hope some are on this list.
1) It would be cool if there was a sponsor interested in the Wikimedia
Commons Picture of the Year (POTY) competition. Either the finalists
from 2007 could be printed up nice and big and displayed
(<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2007/Finalists>),
or the 2006 & 2007 archives could be burnt onto DVDs, and put in the
schwag bags (<http://download.wikimedia.org/poty/>).
2) Maybe this idea doesn't need any organisation from the organisers,
but the attendees :) but I was thinking it would be cool if there was
either a "schwag swap" or a "schwag auction". People could bring items
they had made themselves (t-shirts, stickers and other items with
funny Wikimedia-related slogans) and then either swap them with
others, or donate them for an auction, for people to bid for. The
money raised could go to a local educational charity, for example.
Thoughts?
cheers,
Brianna

Hi Christian, I'm copying your email to the
Wikimania-l(a)list.wikimedia.org list, which is the appropriate place to
ask this question :)
Thanks.

planning.
Guys,
OK, now an outsider had had his knuckles wrapped & knows a little of what’s
going on, and that there is a programme committee elist buzzing furiously,
can I just suggest a few things, in attempts ot include a few other
foreigners.
I’ve asked the guys at gossamer threads to take a feed from this list and
attempt to make it comprehensible. You’ll see what I mean if you look at
this. HYPERLINK
"http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/wiki/wikimania/"http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/wiki/wikimania/
Cary would you like to put this link on the HYPERLINK
"https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimania-l"https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimania-l page, perhaps next to the archive
link. At least a foreigner can easily see that apart from announcements, and
my indiscretion, Dec 23 is the only conversation. They’ll never know
anything about the programmes committee’s list, but that’s up to them if
they wanted to offer their (locked) archives for perusal. You could do the
same for other the other 5 WMF lists as well if you wanted.
I wouldn’t preclude wikback from some WM conversations. I did set up a
thread over there, if you wanted to be inclusive of the disaffected. If you
look at the readership, it’s around 5 times this thread (and some good ideas
as well)

353&gonew=1#UNREAD
Just a note about the technical track. You may be across this remote group.

Might not even be talking WMF but that’s the way communications seems to
happen in remote WMF related communities.
RE IRC. It’s better than nothing. But would someone ask Jay, the new comms
manager, if he couldn’t suggest a quick improvement. I have mentioned the
idea of the accessgrid (as where IRC will end up if it overeats) a number of
times and Markie will shoot me for doing it again. But if the guys in the
bibliotech are interested in linking a few global spots, then we might help
a few old national librarians to understand how a younger mind thinks about
libraries these days (and vice versa) regards, simonfj
