If ill manners justify physical threats, then some of us are past due

Do we have a policy on "best of" lists?
A page "List of best physicists" was quickly deleted. It consisted of
several such lists, some of them with a reference, others without it.
Similarly, our anonymous "year in music" user added several "<year> in
KROQ" pages (KROQ being a radio station); those were also deleted. In case
2 I agree without reservation, in case 1 I think it might have been
rewritten to be useful (perhaps under the title "Lists of best .." rather
than "List of best ..").
In both cases, we have authorities who are being cited as selecting
information from a larger sample. There could also be "Lists of best
science fiction stories", "Lists of best novels" etc. Some of these lists
would be written by authorities, others based on collaborative filtering
such as the IMDB top movie lists. In the latter case, when the list is
dynamically changing, an external link might be most appropriate.
But if we allow such lists, do we open the door to all kinds of spam-type,
largely useless lists like the "year in KROQ" pages? Will people enter
never ending NPOV disputes over whether their particular list should be
included? I'm uncertain here and would appreciate some feedback. In any
case, we need a clear policy if it doesn't already exist.

Erik

Thanks, all, for the kind words. I'm not leaving permanently; I've
just got to dedicate myself to schoolwork for awhile--I have a trip
coming up and then considerable work to do on a project due 2 days
after I return. I'll be back on the 'pedia in late February. With
any luck, I'll have a few more pix and/or articles to contribute.
best wishes,

It may just be a once off, but it is worth keeping an eye out for. One of
DW's many arguments with Zoe rested her (correct) decision to put in a
country of orgin next to a person's details. He screamed blue murder and
obscenities about this. At 5.06am GMT (Monday, Jan 27) DW 'doctored' an
article on George Washington to add in the word ''British'' to describe the
first US president, with a note that said
''inserting nationality as per rules asserted
repeatedly by Zoe . . . DW''
Hopefully it is a rather childish once off bit of vandalism, but it is worth
keeping an eye out just in case. Being rude, obnoxious and offensive is one
thing (apparently I'm now a 'phoney', so he has obviously reached P in his
dictionary!) but deliberately tampering with articles out of spite is a more
serious matter. If that is his standard of behaviour, does Wiki really need
DW? Has the time come for a ban, even a short one, to bring him to his
senses.

For eons people have complained that "Put the text of the new page
here." is extremely unhelpful and promotes confusion among newbies to
wiki; that it discourages people from doing anything further with the
site as they don't know what they've stumbled into; and that it
encourages a lot of useless blank, "Put the text of the new page here",
and "What does this do? FJSDIOJDFS" pages. Longer, more informative
messages have been suggested.
As an experiment, I've gone ahead and changed the (English) message to
the following:
You've followed a link to a page that doesn't exist yet. If you'd
like to create a new page under this title, delete this message and
get typing! Click the 'Help' link up top if you haven't used a
Wiki before and aren't sure how to go about it.
If you didn't mean to create a new page, just click the 'back'
button in your browser, or use the search box at the top of the
screen to find existing articles.
Suggestions for more consice, professional, friendly, and informative
wording are welcome.

I haven't been around here long, but it doesn't take very long to learn that Koyaanis is a gentleman in
the best sense of the word. Please, KQ, stick around. None of us trained monkeys have quite your

Isis is claiming on [[Talk:Juliette Binoche]] that there is no such thing as a copyright on a photograph, and that we can use any photos we want of people and buildings. Any responses?

Yikes! I too have had to deal with DW's dictatorial attitude on several
occasions. He has a tendency to DEMAND that people do things and if they
don't then he states, as fact, that they are MORONS and IDIOTS who have no
BUSINESS SENSE. I for one am /completely/ sick of it.
Bad manors like this should not at all be encouraged. One way or another DW
needs to stop being so confrontational and play nice or he needs to leave (my
preference at the moment). He also needs to realize that he doesn't own the
articles he works on and that his contributions really aren't as great as he
thinks they are (and even if they were that that doesn't excuse such bad
behavior).
BTW, wasn't it the general bad behavior and poor work by especially DW along
with a demand by him for JHK's credentials that precipitated her leaving the
project? I can't speak of JHK but I'm pretty sure that was the case.
