As a woman I have the right that the identity Marie-Claude Mallet-Lemaire does not appear in the wikidata. My main references on my published papers is on: https://inspirehep.net/authors/1000606 in both nuclear and particle Physics.

Is the issue that you prefer to be known as "Marie-Claude Lemaire"?
I just want that I do not appear Mallet-Lemaire particle physics researcher in when you do in google :mc lemaire+ particle particle physics and Marie-Claude Lemaire + particle physics . The Joliot-Curie prize I got was in nuclear physics. I never use the identity Mallet-Lemiare in particle physics. The qualifier particle physics researcher is wrong. In addition I do not understand why this information is published in wikidata 18 years after my retirement and 43 years after the event. I am very upset.

i still appear in Google Chrome as Marie-Claude MALLET-LEMAIRE as particle researcher with now a crazy page. I use rarely this identity only in nuclear physics. I want to DISAPPEAR from wikidata . It is Clear.

I have checked and it looks like the wikidata item has now been updated to reflect the name "Marie-Claude Lemaire".
However, it still appears in Google because Google has not re-indexed the page yet. For this you just have to wait, as it's unknown how long it will take and Google does not respond to user requests for re-indexing. Hopefully it will not take long.
Cheers, Marielle
A little off topic but I’m curious. I assumed that the datas were shown as the structured data knowledge graph but it appears they are not and the page is shown as first result by Google. I don’t think I have ever seen a Wikidata first result from a Google request ! I don’t even recall that a Wikidata item page result in a regular request. I assume there are few links to Wikidata page on the web …
Does that happen often ? What links Wikidata page so that they are on the top results sometimes ?

As people have already explained, the problem on Wikidata has been fixed. We have no control over Google or the way they show information.
You can either wait until Google updates their own information, or ask Google for a correction of the data.
Please, understand that we did all that we could have done in this particular situation, and that all that goes beyond it we cannot do.

Wikidata contributors were probably not aware of those wishes. It’s an open project anyone can contribute to, and do their best.
Those data can be used because someone insert some fact in Wikidata with one of the articles you wrote as a reference. Wikidata internally use your datas on this page to reference you as author of the reference.
Datas about awards are typically used to build statistics about gender biais on awards, for example see https://dl.acm.org/doi/fullHtml/10.1145/3479986.3479992 for such a study using Wikidata data.

Google is a huge company with automated process. The robot that takes the information up to date will soon reach your page and update, but as simple users just as you and not insiders there is not much possibility to reach them and order them to speed things up. As they index the whole web it can take some time I guess, there is a massive quantity of data to reach up. I guess they also prioritize places with a lot of views to visit more frequently, your Wikidata page is probably not visited or updated very much compared to much more visited websites, so it’s not up in their automated pile of work.

Datas about awards are typically used to build statistics about gender biais on awards, for example see https://dl.acm.org/doi/fullHtml/10.1145/3479986.3479992 https://dl.acm.org/doi/fullHtml/10.1145/3479986.3479992 for such a study using Wikidata data.

If this lady wants her name updated on Google, she would be much better off if the page is kept, with her preferred name.
That way Google will eventually note the page has been updated, and update their records.
If the page is deleted, Google will never get that trigger, and the name she doesn't like presumably will *never* be updated over on Google.
Therefore Yaroslav I suggest you restore the page.
Best regards,
James.

Hi James, all Maybe the author is convinced that all star eyed with the wrong labeling of her name in the Wikidata URI. Is it possible to know if before the creation of the page in Wikidata, there were know confusion in the Google results? If yes, then maybe that’s why she wants to delete the page. Do we have a way to see such evolution to be sure that the reason is not only with the Wikidata page?
Regarding your last statement, does that mean the Google indexing will never/ever consider at all the absence of the page after some time?

After reading both threads, my understanding is that Dr Lemaire does not want to have the second last name attached to her identity.
The problem is not, given my reading, that she wants everything deleted. It is fine if she does. But she certainly does not want the other last name in any combination to appear with her name.
I acted accordingly and removed the other last name. As can be seen in Dr Lemaire's papers, she has consistently used the name "Marie-Claude Lemaire" and there is no reason not to respect that request.
What I didn't look into is the situation about the award and whether she is a nuclear physicist or a particle physicist. Since there is no other person in Wikidata with the name "Marie-Claude Lemaire", a simple physicist is sufficient too.
Please everyone, remember to be kind, in particular when a person in visible distress is reaching out to the community. I am not going to list the instances of unkindness in our response to Dr Lemaire's plea, but I think they are easy to find. It is easy the case for a person who is not part of our community to misuse terminology, or not to clearly express herself. It is our job to be extra kind in these cases, and try our best to help.
I hope that the page now is in a state Dr Lemaire is content with.
I want to extend her an apology, although I am not sure she will read this message.
Best regards, Denny Vrandečić

It was my understanding that we removed the second unwanted name from Wikidata, if this wasn't the case, then we didn't do all that was needed on our end, and I apologise for thinking we did.
Unfortunately the part about Google stays the same, we can't do anything about it, unless wait for them to update their end of the deal.
Thanks Denny for removing the unwanted name and for clarifying that.

Therefore Yaroslav I suggest you restore the page.

If this is indeed the case this could be a good reason to restore the
page at least temporarily. Why do not we wait for a couple of days and see what happens. (Again, any administrator may restore the page but this likely will have consequences - not from my side).

It is fine if she does. But she certainly does not want the other last

That name is used, online, by - among others - VIAF, ISNI, BNF, Nukat, Worldcat, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the award page previously discussed.

That is clearly not so. See, for example:

I'm sympathetic to Dr Lemaire for whatever demons trouble her, but bowdlerising Wikidata and thereby reducing its usefulness will not resolve them.

That needs to be requested from Google. As you can see Google is showing a result on Wikidata titled "M-C M-L", but the page itself is not named that way, but "M-C L". Making an analogy, this is not that a book has the author name misspelled, but that *it is misspelled in the library catalog*, and when you go pick the book from the shelf, it is actually correct on it. In this case complaining to the editor would not be too helpful. It's the library that needs to fix its catalog. In this case Google.
It is expected that Google will notice and fix the copy automatically... but we don't know *when* it will do that.
I see a new function in Google "Send comments to Google" that lets you provide feedback for a result item. Maybe you could contact Google that way to ask them to fix that entry?
Regards
PS: I would recommend not to continue stating the full name that should-not-be-named. Given that there should be zero results for that one, and this is a public mailing list, I see a risk of searches for that name leading to this very thread.
Another resource that may help you to contact Google would be the form to request from Google the removal of personally identifiable information or doxxing content.
see https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/9673730?hl=fr and the button "Lancer la demande de suppresion".

Perhaps this is the source of mutual misunderstanding. There is no page on Wikidata specifically bind to that name. Technically, there is only a page called "Q89127676", which was previously (and incorrectly) labeled with that name, but it is no longer. That one page now only displays name "Marie-Claude Lemaire" and no other, in all available languages. As you can verify yourself: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q89127676 . As you can see, the page sums up some basic facts about "Marie-Claude Lemaire", along with links to authoritative sources, like INSPIRE-HEP you have mentioned. Wikidata is a free knowledge base that sums up all knowledge there is, and as such, it considers a page about "Marie-Claude Lemaire" to be a valuable part of it. Even though a small part, among the 105 million pages.
Hopefully I have clarified the situation a bit... Now to the crucial question: Are you comfortable that there is a page about "Marie-Claude Lemaire" in Wikidata?
P.S. The situation with Google search has been explained multiple times in this thread so I won't repeat that part again. It is off Wikidata community's hands.
Best regards Jan

That's what we have been trying to explain.
Wikidata people may be easier to reach than Google people, but that doesn't make Wikidata people the appropriate contact to remove content from Google.
Yesterday I suggested you to use the button "Lancer la demande de suppresion" from https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/9673730?hl=fr to request Google to delete "Marie-Claude Mallet-Lemaire".

It seem to need that the WMF or WMDE follow some protocol with Google to authenticate them to Google : https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9008080?hl=en#choose_method

There might be a misunderstanding here. The "admin" in question are not the administrators in the wiki / mediawiki sense, those elected by the contributor’s community, but the admin at the system level.
Those who administrates the website and the machine, the WMF staff, might perform the procedures that Google proposes to gain access to this Google console.

If you mean the complete URL of the Wikidata entry for Marie-Claude Lemiaire, the URL is:
*https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q89127676 https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q89127676*
If I search in Google (using Google Chrome browser, but it should be the same using other tools), I see the Wikidata page is, for me at least, the 5th result. It looks like this:
[image: image.png] Wikidata https://www.wikidata.org › wiki https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q89127676 Marie-Claude. 0 references. family name · Lemaire. 0 references. occupation · physicist. 0 references. academic degree · Doctor of Philosophy. 0 references.
I believe this shows Google has already updated (re-crawled the Wikidata page) and no longer shows the unwanted name that was in the old version of Wikidata. That's all I know.

If I search in Google (using Google Chrome browser, but it should be the same using other tools), I see the Wikidata page is, for me at least, the 5th result. It looks like this:

I believe this shows Google has already updated (re-crawled the Wikidata page) and no longer shows the unwanted name that was in the old version of Wikidata. That's all I know.

Dear Marie-Claude,
The only problem of the page is the reference of CMS-collaboration as I am retired since a long time. My reference is M.C. Lemaire.1 in INSPIRE HEP
There are missing end and start dates for your membership of the CMS collaboration in Wikidata. Would it be ok with you, if someone adds 2012 as the end year of your membership in the CMS collaboration. As that is the year of your last article in inspire HEP related to CMS?
The aim of this wikidata page might seem annoying and very frustrating, and I truly feel for you. We where not as kind as we should have been. I was looking at your wikidata records history, and it was added specifically to not forget great female scientists whom are too often overlooked.
The general idea of wikidata is that people may ask questions: Questions that may seem esoteric at first sight. To do so we need to collect and structure data.
I sincerely hope, that this unpleasant experience will soon be forgotten and that you may enjoy your well earned retirement.
Best regards and well wishes, Jerven Bolleman

Dear Marie,
I have changed the PhD (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q752297) into doctorate in France (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3033550). With the added qualifier "Field of work" being Particle physics. The statement with qualifier should roughly be read as "having attained the degree of doctorate in the french education system, working in the particle physics domain".
I did not change the label from "French physicist" to "particle physicist". In an earlier mail it was mentioned that would be the single instance of such a description. Changing this should be done consistently. Please give us some (probably quite a long) time to study how to best structure such information and see if we can adapt this generally. This discussion/study will be on the relevant wikidata pages and not on this mailing list.
I would like to mention that the Particle part is not forgotten, it was recorded under occupation.
I hope that you may accept this delay and that we as a community try hard to make sure the record reflects reality as exactly as possible. Noting that this is limited by our references. Which for some of these kind of details are hard to find online.
Regards, Jerven

There might be a misunderstanding here. The "admin" in question are not the administrators in the wiki / mediawiki sense, those elected by the contributor’s community, but the admin at the system level.
Those who administrates the website and the machine, the WMF staff, might perform the procedures that Google proposes to gain access to this Google console.
This is not a priority for WMF, and will hardly be in the next foreseeable future. So please stop referring to this possibility as a viable option, since it's not, and mentioning it only creates more confusion.
The scope of this thread should be to *actually help* Ms Lemaire getting what she wants. Sorry for my bluntness, but throwing around ideas that are not actionable by us is not helping anyone. Ms Lemaire is evidently not very knowledgeable with the whole thing, and going for theoretical fields will only confuse her more.

Good luck
As a library cataloger, I can tell you that the link to the Polish catalog doesn't demonstrate what you think it does. The name after the slash in the Tytul field gives the name in the form on the publication: M.-C. Lemaire.
The form in the Autor field is a standardized form used by the library, based on other sources of information.
It appears that the author considers the compound surname form of name a "deadname" and wants it to disappear, at least when someone does a Google search for her name. The Wikidata result in a Google search is dated April 25, so it probably won't change until it is reindexed.

It is fine if she does. But she certainly does not want the other last name in any combination to appear with her name.
That name is used, online, by - among others - VIAF, ISNI, BNF, Nukat, Worldcat, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the award page previously discussed.
I acted accordingly and removed the other last name. As can be seen in Dr Lemaire's papers, she has consistently used the name "Marie-Claude Lemaire" and there is no reason not to respect that request.
That is clearly not so. See, for example:

I'm sympathetic to Dr Lemaire for whatever demons trouble her, but bowdlerising Wikidata and thereby reducing its usefulness will not resolve them.

As a library cataloger, I can tell you that the link to the Polish
catalog doesn't demonstrate what you think it does. The name after the slash in the Tytul field gives the name in the form on the publication: M.-C. Lemaire.
I said it was an example. There are plenty of others that disprove the claim "As can be seen in Dr Lemaire's papers, she has consistently used the name "Marie-Claude Lemaire".
I understand the very urgent desire that after a name change it is also tracked on the web. And I understand that if after 18 years of struggle this is undone again, the suffering is great. A person's name is one of the most important identity-forming characteristics. And if something goes wrong, it leads to lasting psychological damage.
Since our work at Wikidata played a negative role in this, could we help to write an appropriate short Wikipedia article? The Joliot-Curie prize for nuclear physics should provide enough relevance for the French, English and German Wikipedia. That would certainly help to correct the Google hit as well.

PS: That the wikidata entry will be corrected and of course not deleted is in my opinion self-evident (even if the name bearer wished it - it is not in her sense)

That sounds like a good idea

See also https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/ask-google-to-re... for Google tooling that Wikidata could use to request URLs to be recrawled. I don't know who is set up (if anyone) to access Google's Search Console on behalf of Wikidata or Wikimedia, but it might potentially help here.

This would be great tooling to have in general: a way for WD editors (admins?) to send a "please update now" query to Google and other indexes, for cases where time is of the essence.

Other tools would perhaps be more suited for this: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9689846
Nonetheless, take into account that Google treats Wikipedia sites specially (also probably wiktionary, wikisource... not sure if Wikidata as well). It usually picks changes real quick, but it seems to be lagging on this case.
Hi Everyone,
I think this is a good opportunity to discuss with Google's Search Team here in Singapore in 2 weeks time.
You can register at Wikimania pre-Conference at this link:

Kind regards,
Butch
