Hi everyone,
As you're likely aware, the Wikimedia Foundation's Machine Learning and
Research teams have been working on migrating from ORES to Lift Wing — a
new open-source machine learning infrastructure. This shift brings a host
of new capabilities and simplifies the process of retraining models over
time. (For more details, see the previous announcement
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/wikitech-l@lists.wikimedia.org/…>
)
Lift Wing has already been trained using a dataset comprising reverted and
patrolled edits. However, it would be extremely helpful to have additional
new training data to help the model get even better at detecting
problematic edits on Wikidata. Therefore, we need your help.
How You Can Contribute
The Research team built a tool to make your involvement easy and effective.
This tool allows you to label new training data quickly and efficiently.
You can find the tool here: Annotation Tool.
<https://annotool.toolforge.org/> It will show you an edit and ask you if
you would keep or revert the edit. You can skip any you are not sure about.
By participating in this process, you're helping enhance the accuracy of
the bad edits detection system on Wikidata, making it more robust and
reliable.
If you encounter any issues or want to provide general feedback, feel free
to leave us a note on this ticket phab:T341820
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T341820>.
Cheers,

Hello all,
The first language community meeting is coming up in a few weeks - November
17th, 16:00 UTC.
If you're interested, you can sign up on this wiki page: <
https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Wikimedia_Language_engineering/…>
[1].
We would like to invite all of you who are involved in creating content or
managing technical aspects across different language communities. This will
be a participant-driven meeting, where we collectively discuss specific
technical issues related to our language wikis and work together to find
possible solutions. This could involve anything from fixing a broken
template on the Kurdish wiki to brainstorming ideas for growing content on
the Tulu Wiktionary, currently in the Wikimedia Incubator, or celebrating
the creation of Fon Wikipedia, to using MinT for content translation.
You can view the meeting structure and add ideas for discussion to the
notes document here: <

[2]
If you need interpretation support from English to another language, please
let us know by sending an email to ssethi(a)wikimedia.org.
Looking forward to your participation!

Dear Wikimedians,
Greetings to all of you.
As you are aware, Wikidata is celebrating its remarkable journey as it
marks its 11th birthday, reflecting on the remarkable transformation of the
past decade.
These birthday festivities span a wide array of events taking place both
online and offline across the globe
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Eleventh_Birthday/Events>,
attracting participation from Wikimedians, data enthusiasts, and open
knowledge advocates. Through activities such as edit-a-thons, workshops,
and meetups, these gatherings serve as a unifying force for contributors
and open data enthusiasts.
To celebrate Wikidata's 11th birthday, we've organized a series of
thrilling events and activities in India.
*Datathon*
A *11 day long Wikidata data-thon* is planned to celebrate Wikidata's 11th
birthday in India.[1] The data-thon is organised to celebrate the birthday
of Wikidata along with learning how we can contribute to Wikidata and make
use of it in different Wikimedia projects.
The data-thon aims to enhance Wikidata items by incorporating labels and
descriptions in your native language, along with the addition of
references, qualifiers, and statements. Additionally, it encourages the
utilization of India-related properties within these items, ultimately
contributing to the improvement of structured data in Wikidata.
To stay updated and get involved, please have a look at the event page
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_India/Events/Wikidata_El…>
[1]
and join the datathon by adding your name in the participants section. The
page also provides details about the tasks and activities scheduled as part
of the datathon.

Furthermore, we are thrilled to inform you that Srishti Sethi and I (Gopa)
recently attended the Google Summer of Code Mentor Summit held at Google
Headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. We represented the outstanding work
of our nine GSoC 2023 interns on Wikimedia projects and had the privilege
of learning from peers in various open-source software fields, including
arts, education, music, robotics, and more. This event, conducted in an
unconference, participant-driven style, provided a platform for attendees
to discuss the challenges of running open-source projects and share
valuable tips and advice for mentoring interns. It's worth noting that
Wikimedia has been an active participant in Google Summer of Code since
2006.
Once again, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all our interns,
mentors, and everyone who supported them throughout this journey. We
eagerly anticipate their continued contributions to Wikimedia projects.

Hello everyone,
We have a quick update regarding the Mismatch Finder tool. In the next
deployment scheduled for November 1, the tool will let you report
mismatches on qualifiers in addition to the main part of a statement.
A Quick Overview
For those who might not be familiar with the Mismatch Finder, it's a tool
that helps spot potential mismatches between Wikidata Items and external
databases, presenting them to editors for review and correction. This tool
is also used to suggest new statements that should be part of Wikidata, but
need a human-review step before adding them. You can explore more about it
at Wikidata:Mismatch Finder
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Mismatch_Finder>.
What's on the Horizon?
The Mismatch Finder currently allows mismatch providers to report
mismatches to data that is stored in the main part of a statement. In the
upcoming deployment, mismatch providers will have the option to report
mismatches found within qualifiers, as important data is stored there as
well. This change will require mismatch uploaders to adjust their workflow,
as we will introduce a new 'type' column to the accepted CSVs. The CSV
upload will look as follows:
CSV for a Q42 statement with qualifier, where both the statement and the
qualifier are mismatched:
item_id,statement_guid,property_id,wikidata_value,external_value,external_url,type
Q42,Q42$A3B1288B-67A9-4491-A3AA-20F881C292B9,P3373,Q14623673,”Shoshanna
Adams”,example.com,statement
Q42,Q42$A3B1288B-67A9-4491-A3AA-20F881C292B9,P1039,Q10943095,”cousin”,
example.com,qualifier
CSV for a Q42 statement with qualifier, where only the qualifier is
mismatched:
item_id,statement_guid,property_id,wikidata_value,external_value,external_url,type
Q42,Q42$A3B1288B-67A9-4491-A3AA-20F881C292B9,P1039,Q10943095,”cousin”,
example.com,qualifier
This new feature is currently being developed under T313467
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T313467> where you can find more
detailed information and to follow the progress of this enhancement. If you
have questions or concerns or want to provide feedback, please use the
linked Phabbricator ticket or leave us a note at Wikidata talk:Mismatch
Finder <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:Mismatch_Finder>.
Cheers,
