Hello Gregor, Thank you for your clear and convincing summary of 3rd party data licensing. Could you or someone else on- or off-list tell me if Wikimedia is planning some sort of comprehensive technical separation of 3rd party data to ensure attribution, clearance of rights for downstream reuse etc.? However, while the database right gives you certain rights, it does not give you a copyright (i.e. the conent may be legally problematic, but it cannot be covered by CC BY-SA). Thus, the use on Wikipedia is either exclusively licensed with an obligation to prevent re-use by third parties (which is not the case, WMF does not do this), or it is illegal, or acceptance of open re-use is an implicit waiver of database rights. I believe you can not allow it on Wikipedia but then NOT allow further reuse. However, to clarify: 1. It is much preferable to add such data to Wikidata and include their source in a structured way. Whether OGL or other licenses need to be explicitly supported by Wikidata in the future will have to be a separate discussion, on Wikidata.org. 2. My goal in participating in this discussion is to avoid the impression that re-use of Wikipedia content is not possible at all without looking at each invidivual data element and record. 3. Wikidata plans to support a hierarchy of multiple data for the same statement (multiple values from different sources for a single property in a single item). This makes it possible (although not required) to mix Wikipedia-harvested information with poor sourcing with clean, well sourced data. 4. Not harvesting from Wikipedia implies to verify that almost all information from Wikipedia is in WIkidata, but cleanly sourced, before it si possible to migrate a class of infoboxes to Wikidata. I believe this is an impossible task, making some import of Wikipedia-harvested data necessary. Where better, sourced information exist, these would take precedence. [Wikidata-l] A framework for policies & similar stuffs

Hi all wikidatians! I don't know if the matter has been already took in consideration but I think we should state a framework for policies, help and community pages. There's not so much to do, we already have a working model which is Commons. For example I've just seen https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Descrizione which is quite fine with me but it should be a translation of a common policy https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Description placed under https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Descrizione/it currently our {{autotranslate}} is transcluded only into another template, I hope the list will increase asap ;) Vito

[Wikidata-l] language switching turned off for anonymous users

Heya folks, We unfortunately had to switch off language switching for anonymous users because of caching issues and people seeing random languages on wikidata.org because of it. It still works for logged-in users. We're working on getting it back for anonymous users too. You can follow https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42064 for the progress. Sorry for that. [Wikidata-l] Quick clarification on infobox migration

Hi All, I was thinking of creating a tool to help people write, edit and validate taxoboxes on en.wikipedia.org but then wikidata was pointed out to me. It looks like an exciting project. Reading the technical proposal, phase 2, not to be done in project: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Technical_proposal#Not_to_be_done_b… I'm not clear whether existing data in infoboxes will be used to populate wikidata as it doesn't appear to come into any of the categories of data listed. Will this be automated or semi-automated task? Am I just not reading it correctly? *If* I were to a work on an editor tool would it be feasible to think in terms of editing existing syntax for now and in version two adding a "migrate to wikidata" button? Would all the exiting infoboxes move over to wikidata in a 'big bang' approach? My second (impossible) question: What time scale are we looking at for live infoboxes actually being populated by wikidata data? Hi folks, have a look at https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q49382&rcid=449383&setlang=hu This item has a German label with no link and nothing else. My question is not if it is useful or not (this is up to the community) but why do I see it completely empty when I set a language other than German? Why do I not see descriptions in every language, only in my chosen one? Why can I edit description only in my chosen language? Or do I do soemthing wrong? -- Bináris

Hi folks, I am new to Wikidata, so forgive me if I make a question that is so obvious you'll raise your eyebrows. I did not find the info in the docs, however. Is there a tool which lists the items wheere a given language would be missing?
