The Bodleian Libraries and Wikimedia UK will be supporting a Wikimedian in
Residence. The post provides the opportunity to work with some of the
world’s richest collections to improve content on Wikipedia and its sister
projects and to share with the world the resources held in the Bodleian
Libraries.
As Wikimedian in Residence you will engage with staff, the public and
researchers to encourage contributions to the development of content on
Wikipedia and to make the Libraries’ digitised collections more accessible,
with a particular focus on areas currently under-represented on Wikipedia.
You will also undertake academic and public outreach work to encourage
understanding and development of Wikimedia projects and improve access to
the Libraries’ collections, including events such as editathons and
workshops.
This exciting position is ideal for someone with an understanding of
Wikimedia’s mission to preserve open knowledge as well as experience of
delivering training. You will be an experienced Wikimedian with excellent
verbal and written communication skills and an ability to teach and support
other users.
The position is part-time (18.75 hours per week/0.5FTE) for a fixed-term of
12 months. You will work with both the Communications Team in central
Oxford and Bodleian Digital Library Systems and Services at Osney.
You will be required to upload a supporting statement as part of your
online application. Your statement should list the selection criteria, as
listed in the further particulars, and explain how you meet each one. CVs
will not form part of the selection process.
Only applications received online before 12.00 midday on Monday 19 January
2015 can be considered. Interviews are expected to take place on 4 or 5
February 2015.
All the best,
Daria

Dear all,
We would like to inform you about the project Wiktionary Meets Matica
Srpska [1]. This project aims to increase support for Open Knowledge /
Free Content movement through establishing long term strategic
partnership with the venerable cultural institution Matica Srpska [2]
and to increase the quality, accuracy and volume of Wiktionaries through
digitization of two dictionaries, while developing a potential model for
future development of cooperation across Wiktionaries through targeted
mobilization of the communities.
There are two activities within the project that we need your support
for. First, we are preparing a list of lexicographical terms (it would
contain approximately 100 terms) that needs to be translated into as
many languages as possible, in order to ensure further work on the
project and to create the foundations for other lexicographical projects
in the future. For this task, we would use a separate application, but
all of the terms would be inserted into Wiktionaries, as well (making
approximately 10,000 new entries per Wiktionary, counting that the
terminology would be translated into 100 languages). That would also
serve as the preparation for translating the Serbian Ornithological
dictionary, which is the second activity.
The Serbian ornithological dictionary encompasses all local names of
birds living on the Serbian speaking territory. All names are specified
under the appropriate Latin name in accordance with the contemporary
classification system. This creates the opportunity to translate it
easily to various languages, since the basic list of terms is in Latin
and it is fairly small (370 species of birds).
We would like to try and motivate as many Wiktionary communities as
possible to participate in translating these two dictionaries,
especially since the benefit for each particular Wiktionary would be
great - for example, if we succeed to motivate people from 100
Wiktionaries to participate, the amount of primary entries to these 100
Wiktionaries would be 3,700,000 (37,000 per Wiktionary). If we succeed
to motivate just 20 Wiktionaries, the amount of entries to these 20
Wikitionaries would be 148,000 basic entries. Of course, these entries
would be incorporated into the respective Wiktionaries according to the
interest and the rules of each community.
With this project, we are opening cooperation with the venerable Serbian
cultural institution Matica srpska and we believe that this partnership
will have major impact on future cooperation between Wikimedia
organizations and similar institutions in Slavic countries. If this
cooperation could be relevant to any other partnership you are trying to
establish in your country or globally, we would be more than willing to
share our knowledge and contacts.
Besides support in translation, we are open for Wikimedia volunteers to
participate more substantially and thus build knowledge inside of the
community on how to deal with this kind of data. For example, if you are
willing to join the core team and help us in communication with the
Wiktionary communities of the languages which you are speaking, please
contact Milica (milica.gudovic(a)yahoo.com) or Milos (millosh(a)gmail.com)
via email. The same goes if you are willing to contribute by coding in
Python and/or PHP.
Please join us on project's discussion page [3] or send us an e-mail.
If you are willing to participate but are not sure in your knowledge of
English please check the list of languages organizational team is
speaking - there is a chance we can communicate in your native language.
We are very excited about this projects and hope that you will be part
of it as well!
Looking forward to hear from you!

This sounds to me as something for a blog post!
On January 1 we celebrate Public Domain Day [1] as many works of authors
who died 70+ years ago now enter the public domain and can be used freely.
Let us be aware: copyright is temporary. It only lasts during the authors
lifetime and 70 years afterwards (in most countries). During those years it
is limiting Wikipedia and her sister projects in showing works of art,
literature, public art and buildings in countries without freedom of
panorama [2], and more in the articles. But now a new batch is freed from
copyrights!
An overview of images and texts that are restored or added to the Wikimedia
Commons, are collected on:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Romaine/Public_Domain_Day/2015
Many of these files still need a place in articles. You can help!
You can also help by uploading new files of subjects that are freed of
copyrights.
You can also help by tagging all requests for deletion pages with the
category when the file can be restored, which is/was deleted. [3]
As I follow the log of restored files this week, more images and texts will
follow. If still files or texts are missing in the list, let me know or add
them yourselves.
A very happy Public Domain Day!

Hi folks,
This past Sunday WikimediaNYC had the opportunity of training on Wikidata,
courtesy of user emw. His slide presentation is here:
http://www.slideshare.net/_emw/up-and-running-with-wikidata
His nutshell summary: Wikidata is a way to bring structured data to
Wikimedia projects.
Although I knew a little about Wikidata already, his presentation and
personal revelation ("I almost never edit Wikipedia now; all my editing is
on Wikidata") convinced me that I have to be more active on Wikidata (at
least now I know how to begin being more active).
So I'm wondering whether there are any GLAM projects that regularly
undertake Wikidata editing/integration as part of their activities.
Other suggested activities from WM/NYC meeting are listed here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC#Activities_for_the_Wikid…
If you've never done any Wikidata, I highly recommend the Wikidata Game:

Dear all,
for two years now, Wikimedia Deutschland runs the project GLAM on tour (
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/GLAMonTour), which fosters
relationships between GLAM volunteers and cultural heritage institutions.
On the latest tour station in the city of Brilon, we had a film produced
that illustrates how cultural heritage institutions and GLAM volunteers
work together on a local level. Here it is:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_on_GLAM-Tour_Kulturkooper…
We wanted to illustrate how cultural cooperations with GLAMs can be
started, motivate volunteers to engage in GLAM activities themselves and
examplify for cultural institutions, how an editathon or other activities
with Wikipedians might look like.
Please feel free to add subtitles (German and English already available),
or get in touch with us . We love to get your comments, feed back and
questions.

[sorry for cross-posting]
Hi there,
maybe some of you have seen it already: Wikimedia Deutschland, the German
Commission for UNESCO and North Rhine-Westphalian Library Service Centre
just published a guide on how to correctly use Creative Commons licenses.
You can read all about it here:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2014/12/09/using-licenses-easy-and-legal/.
The guide also has a pretty nice Meta page (
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Open_Content_-_A_Practical_Guide_to_Using_C…)
where you can read the full text or download the PDF. Thanks to Jean-Fred
for turning on the translation tool! I am looking forward to the guide
being available in many, many languages.
If you have any comments or questions, please get in touch with me via
e-mail or the talk page on Meta (
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Open_Content_-_A_Practical_Guide_to_Us…
).
Best,
Katja
