Structured Data on Commons - community consultation on basic properties for media files

Hi everyone! This month, we warmly invite you to take part in a community consultation on Wikimedia Commons, to list the basic properties that media files will need for structured data. We have already collected some examples of 'GLAM-ish files': a (photographed) 3D object, a map, an engraving, a digitized film, the interior of a building, and a photo related to performing arts - but you are encouraged to add more examples to the mix! Reminder: Open Call for Working Group members (Movement Strategy)

Dear Wikimedians, We are closing the application form for Working Group members later today.[1] Please consider applying, if you are interested in strategic conversations about movement structures in thematic areas like roles and responsibilities, revenue streams, resource allocation, partnerships, capacity building, advocacy, technology and product, diversity or community health. We have received more than 100 applications by now and are looking for more! I would like to encourage you to also consider applying even if you have not contributed to movement strategy conversations before or feel that you might lack experience or expertise to contribute. Your perspective might still enrich the discussions and we would like to see a broad diversity of voices in the conversations, from each corner of the movement. We have heard a lot of feedback regarding 5 hours per week that we expect to be the average time investment for members of the Working Group. Time investment will vary depending on the week and progress: there will possibly be weeks with little to do (e.g. reading a one-pager), but there will also be weeks where members will need to read, discuss, design or review research tasks, agree, and communicate with each other and with other groups, have online-meetings or will attend in person events, write and review documents and emails etc. It will all also depend on how the working group decides to work together, and on the members and their individual work and conversations styles. Working groups will be supported according to their needs, for example in terms of facilitation, administration and translation. If you think you can only invest 2-3 hours, but bring a unique set of experiences or background, please also consider applying! We will take a variety of criteria into account when selecting the members together with our Steering Committee. Next steps: Selection of Working Group members will happen in the first half of July. The minimum number of members for working groups to be established is 6. That means, we might start with a smaller Working Group, then map the gaps in terms of diversity, representation and expertise and identify profiles of members that we need to bring into the group. Recruiting and selection of additional members will not only happen in July, but also at later stages in the process, depending on the needs the Core Team and the Working Groups identify. [x-posted announcement] Hello, Wikimedia Foundation’s Language team is currently working on the second version of Content Translation - the popular tool that helps you create new Wikipedia articles by translating from another article. More than 300000 articles have been translated <https://blog.wikimedia.org/2018/04/23/content-translation-whats-next/> using this tool already. To give a preview of what to expect in the improved version of the tool, we would like to invite you for an online office hour session scheduled for Wednesday, July 4th, 2018 at 13:00 UTC. This will be a showcase and open session to talk about upcoming changes to Content Translation and ongoing development. You can know more about Content Translation on the project page <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Content_translation> or you can even watch a short video <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3btQ5fpn4sA>. Hi Arne, Good question! It might help if you share the exact Commons-cat the image are in, that helps us better assess the situation. I imagine a number of potential helpouts: 1) I guess asking a Commons admin to delete the already uploaded files and reupload using Pattypan would be the easiest way forward. 2) Assuming all images are in 1 Commons-cat : Use custom replace in VisualFileChange.js? (perhaps with reg exps?) 3) In the GLAMwiki toolset I read " Re-upload media from URL - This checkbox allows you to re-upload media for an item that has already been uploaded to the wiki. If the item already exists because of one of your previous uploads, an additional media file will be added to the wiki. If someone else has already uploaded a new version of the media file, then your new upload will be ignored. If the media file does not yet exist in the wiki, it will be uploaded whether this checkbox is checked or not." GLAM collection transferred from Flickr

Hi all, One of our GLAMs was working on a small upload of PD photos from their collection. They were planning to do the upload with Pattypan and use creator, language templates etc. to enrich the metadata as much as possible. However, these photos were already available on their Flickr account under a PD license with basically the same information about the photos (description was limited anyway). Another user has recently transferred these with Flickr2Commons. So these images are now already on Commons, but their description and other information is not as good as could have been if all available templates etc. had been used. This is a first for me. I'm aware that nothing could have been done about the Flickr to Commons transfer except not putting them there in the first place, but clearly the current situation is not in our best interest or that of the GLAM and is certainly not a best practice. Any comments on this? What would be a good way to handle this situation?
