The mailing list format is all well and good, but it's led to problems; people are talking "too much", there are concerns about editing attitude, and it's a relatively obscure and odd-to-wrangle interface for those not familiar with it. In addition, the structure of mailing lists by default means that things that suggestions which aren't immediately popular tend to drop off the face of the earth. With the usability and Strategic Plan projects, a dedicated wiki was created where people could turn up and discuss ideas and projects in a far more open and easily navigable format. Would it be an idea to create gendergap.wikimedia.org, or outreach.wikimedia.org, or *something*, where we could apply that open and familiar format to this problem as well?
I'd totally support this. The mailing list format moves fast and loses things fast; a wiki format would give us a little more space to breathe.

Outreachwiki already exists. The gendergap discussion may be on-topic there, but ask at http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Village_pump - someone might have opinions.

Fred
Allow me to disagree with this proposal.
We have rather too many low-activity niche wikis in the Wikimedia universe already.
Far better would be a better organization and development of existing content on Meta, where people will actually interact with it.
Perhaps start with a more encompassing Gendergap "portal" on Meta?

I can help make this happen. It's sort of nascent already...

It would be helpful to explain how Meta.wikimedia interacts with En.wikipedia and others, since not clear to some of us I'm sure. (Just discovered this good over view page https://secure.wikimedia.org/ )
For example, while I have proposed people set up "WikiProject:WomensCafe" at diff language wikis, I'm not sure if it is appropriate to set up OutReach projects at the different wikipedias or if that only can be done on meta.
FYI, I'm actually more interested in outreach to educated and retiring by the tens of thousands weekly Seniors who are computer savvy and have time on their hands. (And that would include a lot of women.) So I'm not sure what the best way to go about that is.
And as I said to someone else, AARP magazine is a great place to get an article about outreach published AND to advertise. Even as a libertarian slightly embarassed about getting social security, my AARP magazine is the one I get most excited about reading monthly!
