Hi all,
Daria Cybulska (at WMUK) and I are working on organising an event for Ada
Lovelace Day (16th October, though ours may fall on the 19th) -
http://findingada.com/about/ - "...an international day celebrating the
achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths".
We're modelling it on Sarah's "Women in Science" event at the Smithsonian
from earlier this year - which, by happy coincidence, was on almost the
same topic, so we get to crib shamelessly. ;-)
http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Case_studies/Smithsonian_Institutio…
Has anyone run an event around Lovelace Day in the past? Is anyone else
thinking about doing so? We'd be interested to hear about it, if so...
Thanks,
- Andrew.

Hi gap minders!
The Wikipedia Education Program has a wave of courses that are about start,
and one in particular may be interesting to list members:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:USEP_Women_in_Religious_Traditions:_…
That one needs an experienced editor to mentor the class as an "Online
Ambassador". If anyone is interested in that, let me know. (There's a
lightweight application process on-wiki to become an Online Ambassador.)
There's another one that already has one Online Ambassador supporting it,
but I'm sure additional help would be welcome:

Hi everyone!
I wanted to share a few recent changes to the Gender Gap mailing list
webpage:
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/gendergap
There you will see a new "About Gendergap" description. It includes a
shorter description of what the list goal is, a note about the new
moderation policy, our civility policy, and a place to learn more if
you're new to "minding the gap."
We have also crafted a new welcome message for new list members
stressing these points in a friendly manner. It also encourages new
members to introduce themselves.
I do hope you'll join me in inviting friends, Wikimedians, and
colleagues of any gender who share our common goal: to increase the
participation of women and transwomen in Wikimedia projects. Think about
colleagues and friends who have a passion for wiki's, women's culture,
open source, open stuff, GLAM, and so forth. Feel free to also forward
this email off list to mailing lists.
Thank you everyone for your ongoing passion, contributions and remember,
WE CAN [EDIT]! [1]

I apologize to those I have made uncomfortable with my tone. I never intended to silence those voices of women here trying to do outreach, which was why I helped organise WikiWomenCamp.
I would like for the moderators to unsubscribe me as I feel unsafe in voicing my opinion and unsupported by the list by active outreach I do.
I want to humbly thank the administrators for telling me this during the Paralympic Games Opening Ceremonies, which I am covering for Wikimedia, and working on to help improve disability related and women's outreach.
I hope I can do better with my tone and outreach outside the framework of this list where I am less likely to make people uncomfortable.
I am sorry. :( Truly so.

I hate to use physiological excuses, but...the reason I "lost control"
was I had a bad head cold - plus doing strong coffee on top. So
confused mental/emotional states on steroids dominated my writing...
I value Wikipedia as a place where I HAVE to be diplomatic, since I do
lose my temper like that a bit too much sometimes on various male
dominated political lists where there's a lot of flaming, so I was
unhappy about my own "slip."
I did write Mr. Morton and (sort of) apologize for "starting" in such a
provocative "joking" tone because of his "nice" comment, instead of just
making a civil comment/question...and then for my escalating from
there. Two days on my apologies to the him and the list are even more
sincere!! :-)
Glad to see Laura misunderstood and wasn't asked to leave. Politically I
understand worldwide problems with American Imperialism; Wikimedia-wise
I just haven't been sufficiently on top of the intricacies of Wikimedia
politics to understand all the issues so at least there I've been able
to maintain my diplomacy - so far!!

And that's User:Kippelboy :)
Sorry about that!

A recent tweet from the @WikimediaWomen Twitter sent out the list I made
on my userpage for the 100 most powerful women in the world. A Catalan
Wikipedia editor saw it and wrote the list up on Catalan WP:
http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llista_Forbes_de_dones_poderoses
When they posted the list there were only 24, within 24 hours they're
now up to 30 women having articles in Catalan Wikipedia.
Great work User:Kippleboy for spearheading this initiative!
All 100 women in English Wikipedia now have articles:

Dear all,
we have just launched a gender gap mailing list for the German
speaking community.
https://listen.jpberlin.de/mailman/listinfo/gendergap
Everyone who is interested in discussing topics regarding female
participation or gender-specific discrimination in the German speaking
projects is invited to join in.
The mailing list should serve as a platform for connecting and
exchange and we are looking forward to a respective and fruitful
atmosphere.
Should you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Cheers,
Nicole Ebber
