With Lila Tretikov's resignation today, it will be important for people who
think it is important to increase participation by women to speak up about
it as a search is launched for a new Executive Director.
I encourage people to monitor discussions on meta about the qualifications
for a ED, and comment not just about diversity issues but to otherwise make
suggestions.

Hello everyone,
Yesterday, Maggie Dennis announced that Katy Love (WMF Senior Program
Officer, Funds Dissemination Committee) has been promoted to the Director
of Community Resources. She is replacing Siko Bouterse whose last day was
yesterday.
>From my first hand experience working with Katy, I know her to supportive
of programs, projects, and people who are working to increase participation
of women in the wikimedia movement, including women on BoT of affiliate
organization and other leadership positions.
So, I encourage people on this mailing list to participate in the WMF
grants programs in order to develop methods to engage more women.

I just went back and looked for this--it was proposed a couple of months
ago, but got dropped in all the excitement of the last few weeks. I don't
think I have to tell anyone on this list how difficult it is for women's
voices to be heard, and how having some kind of representation on an
elected council could make a difference.
Here is the initial post that caught my eye-- there is some discussion
before and after:
https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimedia-l/2016-January/081042.html
and here is the discussion--now dropped--on meta:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Community_Council_Compact
I don't think anyone could make a case that the community was consulted
enough in the major decisions of the last two years, or that the path of
the Wikimedia movement would not have been smoother if it had. There will
soon be more critical decisions to come, as the Foundation searches for new
leadership. Perhaps it is time to revive this discussion.
Leaving aside the language issue, there's an important issue in this
article re the Gendergap. I had been under the impression that Wikipedia's
ratio of bios by gender was skewed, but overall no more skewed than the
secondary sources. That we have many gaps, male and female but, and this
could be the biggest success of those involved in combating the gender gap,
If a woman makes it into the secondary sources her chances of a Wikipedia
article are now about the same as a man's. Obviously that varies by topic,
there are subjects where people have systematically worked on all the
female redlinks and others where the skew may be the other way. If the
message that was meant by that article was that notable women are less
likely to have an article on them than notable men then we have regressed.
If the message was intended to be that Wikipedia's notability standards
perpetuate past wrongs done to women, then I'd agree, but perhaps the
solution is elsewhere.
More importantly, I had thought that we had failed the women we write about
in two ways. Wikipedia articles about women tend to over emphasise their
appearance and family ties as opposed to the things we cover in bios of
men, and bios of women are linked to less than bios of men. If that's still
the case then I'd appreciate a signpost article on do's and don't when
writing about women, I'm not qualified to write such an article but I do
promise to help promote it. As for relative underlinking, this could just
be a function of time, if the proportion of female BLPS has risen since the
gendergap project started it could just be that articles get more linked to
if they exist. If women are mentioned in other articles but are less likely
to be linked to then I have an idea as to how we might address this, if
they are less likely to be mentioned in other articles then we have a
problem in search of a solution.
PS Those who like and expect profanity in discourse are welcome to crack
the code and count the profanities hidden in this email.

Some notes from Sumana Harihareswara framing codes of conduct, also on the
spectrum of liberty versus hospitality.
There is another piece I saw somewhere associated with the Berkman Center,
that this group might find useful, that gives a framework for evaluating
types of speech. I will try to find it.

To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear friends and colleagues,
I’ve had the amazing privilege of serving this movement in a staff capacity
for the past 4 ½ years, but I’ve now decided to move on from my role at the
Wikimedia Foundation.
Transparency, integrity, community and free knowledge remain deeply
important to me, and I believe I will be better placed to represent those
values in a volunteer capacity at this time. I am and will always remain a
Wikimedian, so you'll still see me around the projects (User:Seeeko),
hopefully with renewed energy and joy in volunteering.
This movement has become my home in so many unexpected ways, and I’m truly
honored to have learned from so many of you. It was an amazing experience
to have partnered with smart, bold, and dedicated community folks to
experiment with projects like Teahouse, IdeaLab, Inspire, Individual
Engagement Grants, and Reimagining Grants. I’ve seen you create some really
incredible content, ideas, tools, programs, processes, committees and
organizations, all in the service of free knowledge.
I expect my last day to be Thursday, February 25th. I have full confidence
in Maggie Dennis's abilities to lead the Community Engagement Department,
and I trust that my team will remain available to support the community’s
needs for grants and other resources throughout this time of transition.
Much love,
Siko

Dear friends,
I would like to invite you to participate in the research project I'm
undertaking as part of the Initiative for Research in Media and Memory at
the University of Hull (UK) and that is hosted here -->
https://wanderingliquen.com/
<https://owa.scar.hull.ac.uk/owa/redir.aspx?C=c4f0f39191af453ab04568aca3e504…>
The aim of this research project is to create an app that will help
individuals to explore a topic of their choice in Wikipedia and provide
them with information (a feedback) on their usage that will highlight the
type of stereotypical biases (memory transgressions towards stereotypes
such as gender, race, economic background etc.) that characterize their
exploration.
The study explores the relationship between human memory and digital memory
in creative archives and is being carried out from a feminist and
decolonial approach, which means that we are trying to be inclusive
throughout the work process and that any feedback you may want to give us
on this and other issues will be very well received and much appreciated.
The research project has three stages:
a) You will be asked to complete an online survey about the user experience
of retrieval and knowledge discovery in creative archives (The
questionnaire will take approximately 8 minutes of your time)
b) The study will require from you an interview where you will be asked to
give further information about some of the questions raised on the general
survey. In order to be as unobtrusive as possible, you will be able to
record it in your own space, on your own time and with your own computer
and send it to the following email address research(a)wanderingliquen.com
(The interview may take between 15 and 30 minutes)
c) You will be asked to participate in 2 online events to test the
usability of the application. The first event will take place between April
and May 2016, the second event will take place between September and
October 2016 and you will decide the extent of your participation)
Your participation in this research will be completely confidential and
data will be averaged and reported in aggregate. Possible outlets of
dissemination may be papers published in academic journals and a PhD
dissertation. Although your participation in this research may not benefit
you personally, it will help us understand how to improve the user
experience of exploration in creative archives such as micro blogging sites
and social media platforms.
Thanks!
