Hmmm
Last week... I saw ONE red point in South Africa. And now... I see none
whatsoever.
How can that be ?
We should see 8 points, should not we ?

Hi all
I'm very happy to say that UNESCO has made the official descriptions of all
Biosphere Reserve sites available under a Wikipedia compatible license.
Currently around 440 (out of 670) of the Biosphere Reserves do not have an
English language Wikipedia article.
These descriptions can be used as the missing Wikipedia articles with very
little adaption. I have created (with a lot of help) a pretty snazzy
Wikidata map and a set of instructions to help people create the missing
articles. As far as I know this is the first time someone has done
something like this The people who have already used the instructions say
it takes around 10 minutes to create a new article, which is quite fast I
think. Please give it a try. You can use the map to see which articles are
missing in each country.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiProject_UNESCO/Create_Biosphere_Reserve…
I would really love it if you could create some articles (there are quite a
few missing sites in Africa) and also retweet me to help more people know
about it. Once the articles are created in English I'm hoping that it will
make it easier for people to create articles in other languages as well.

Thanks very much

FYI, the Kikuyu (Gĩkũyũ) Wikipedia https://ki.wikipedia.org/ has passed
the 1000 article milestone, currently with 1321 articles. At the end of
January it had only 847.
A quick look at random pages, however, shows many of the pages are
single sentence articles on cities. Still, it would be interesting to
know more about who has been doing the recent editing, and their plans.
One evident gap is that the interface (commands) has not yet been
translated into Kikuyu.

Bonjour à tous
Nous avons terminé la rédaction de la demande de financement pour Wiki
Loves Africa 2016
Nous avons besoin de vous de deux façons
1) Voter sur le thème 2016 :
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa/2016_theme_ide…
2) si vous soutenez le projet, merci de le mentionner ici (que vous y
participiez ou pas)
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG/Yorg/Wiki_Loves_Africa_2016
Flo
Hello everyone
We have basically drafted the grant request for Wiki Loves Africa 2016.
At this stage, we need your help in two ways
1) remember to vote on the theme:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa/2016_theme_ide…
2) please endorse the project if you think it is a cool project (whether
you plan to participate or not)
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG/Yorg/Wiki_Loves_Africa_2016
Main changes this year (which would impact participants)
* We asked for more money for the local teams (to do more events, have
local winners and prizes etc.)
* We are changing host organization (the planned host is a swiss non profit)
* We would like to involve Elisabeth Coye, who has been working for
Wikimedia France for several years now on fundraising matters, to
improve accounting and reporting (to have it more consistant, more
informative and hopefully more straightforward and simpler for participants)
Any questions or suggestions, please speak up !

For any interested in African foods, there is a proposal on
en.wikipedia.org to merge two articles on the West African condiment
traditionally made from seeds of the African locust bean tree (aka
nere). African names vary (sumbala, iru, dawadawa, netetu, ojji, etc.)
but there is no English name. The proposal is to use "sumbala" - a
loanword in English (often seen in French spelling, soumbala) - as the
main article.
See
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Sumbala#Proposed_merge_from_Iru_.28food.…
where you can indicate your opinion and give comments.
Apologies if this kind of notice is not appropriate for the list.

Hello Wikimedians,
We are excited to announce the launch of a new Wikimedia Foundation grants
program, Rapid Grants!
Rapid Grants fund Wikimedia community members -- individuals, groups, or
organizations contributing to Wikimedia projects -- to organize projects
throughout the year for up to USD 2,000. Projects can include experiments
or standard needs that don't need broad review to get started. Applications
are reviewed weekly by WMF staff.
Read more about the new program and apply here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid

Hi Don, 1,000 is an accomplishment, thus congrats! Wikistatistics (https://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/SummaryKI.htm) only show non regular activities, large intervals, could not identify a consistent active contributor - maybe he (usually he!) is mostly anonymus and/or has too many intervals.
The statistics on this wiki is not very much up to date (often the case with very small wikis) but still gives a fair picture.
Cheers Ingo
