There are some things in the API: namespace on mediawiki.org that could be a good starting point. Maybe [[API:Quick start guide]] or [[API:FAQ]]. I wrote a bit of both once, but never had the time to make them into something decent. I believe other people have edited those pages since, but I've never really looked at them again.

I've gotten a volunteer to redo https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Main_page incorporating the "Quick start guide". I also devolved some of the less crucial bits to their topic pages. Take a look.
