I understand I need to fix these problems. However, before proceeding I wonder if there are other constraints that I must observe. I have read the material at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Localisation, but did not find the above constraints mentioned there. Is there another place where they are specified?
I've added a few notes about the whitespace stuff: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Localisation#Be_aware_of_whitespace_and_line_b...
Other thing is markup which Mediawiki automatically converts, like ~~~~. This is disabled on translatewiki.net but not when editing messages in local wiki. Also the message names must be valid Mediawiki titles and unique case insensitively (restriction placed by twn).
