I can't post here images, so I can't let you see what I mean. Nevertheless,
try <math>\sqrt 2</math> then <math style="height:1em">\sqrt
2</math>.
Well... now, testing the code, I see a good image: don't matter, I presume
it was only a monitor trouble.
