As far as as I know, no. Image redirects are a fairly new feature in
MediaWiki, and it's quite possible that there may still be some obscure
bugs left, but I'm not aware of any functionality that would've used to
exist in the past but was recently removed.
With queries like this, it generally helps if you describe exactly what
you were trying to accomplish, how you tried to do it and what was the
actual result. If you can answer the last two parts with weblinks that
_show_ what you did and how it turned out, so much the better.
