That is indeed why dumps are in XML - so that people can import it to their own lightweight schemas and storages, rather than torture to death laptops with large-scale wiki indexing scheme.

True, but the problem is rendering the page back. The markup has grown too complex, particularly the templates are a nightmare. Mining the dump for research etc. is ok as it doesn't need to recover the formatting of the pages.
