First of all, MW 1.9.3 is not current, it's a seven-month-old security fix for an eight-month-old branch. The current version is 1.11.0.
Second of all, <math> syntax is just LaTeX, for the most part, with certain parts omitted (basically assume that all code is inside $$...$$ or [ ... ]). For tutorials on how to use LaTeX, try Googling for that, which is really beyond the scope of this list.
Third of all, source code for everything is always available from http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/ .

Thanks for the pointer. More reading. I know MW 1.9.3 is a couple of versions/revisions behind. When you are trying to learn the HowToo's sticking with a particular branch is not a bad idea.
