I don't know why you think a WYSIWYG editor necessarily needs to encourage anyone to make large bold red text.

If the WYSIWYG editor were actually good, and actually displayed *exactly* what the end result would be, I think you'd find that you'd acclimate to it extremely quickly.
That's not WYSIWYG, that's live preview.
Oops, that came out wrong, what I meant was that live preview can do that, no need for WYSIWYG
The difference between WYSIWYG and live preview is that in live preview, you still need to see the raw markup tags. In WYSIWYG, you don't. You see all these markup tags and have no idea what they do until you learn. It's a psychological issue.

The only syntax people need to learn is [[link]]. That's it. Maybe ''italics'' if they feel like it. There's no need to do anything else.
You will inevitably *encounter* much more markup than that. You may not need to *use* it . . . at first . . . but it's user-unfriendly even to have it there. Many, many people will freak out upon seeing a page of markup, especially (as Gregory points out) markup so abstract as the template infoboxes that begin most large pages nowadays.
