What's the context for "before the end": before 1.5 alpha 1 is out or
before 1.5 proper is out?
Before 1.5.0 final, currently scheduled for circa June 1. Might do a
couple more little tweaks yet before alpha1, though.
I'm starting a wiki and considering grabbing
1.5 now to start rather than have to deal with the 1.4 -> 1.5 upgrade in
the future. Would I be signing up for more pain by doing this?
Depends on how brave you are. :)

If it were me, I'd stick with 1.4 for now. There will be an upgrade
mechanism (1.4 -> 1.5) and if you're very concerned about how smooth
that might be, let some time go by after 1.5 is released before you
upgrade -- any major problems should be revealed after a few weeks,
and fixes or work-arounds available.
All of the Wikimedia projects will have to go through the 1.4 -> 1.5
upgrade, so you can be fairly certain that it will work before that
happens.
