Hi what about merging Extension:Update in core of mediawiki the extension is at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Update%C2%A0and tells the user when there is an update to mediawiki and extension it is useful.
Hi! At a quick glance, the code looks rather hackish. Maybe it would take less to just write a similar functionality from scratch.

https://tools.wmflabs.org/meetbot/wikimedia-office/2014/wikimedia-office.201 4-12-03-20.58.log.txt may be of interest. One basic idea is to integrate "check for updates" functionality with Special:Version. For example, adding a button that when pressed checks for updates to MediaWiki core and its extensions and reports the results.
