I don't think MediaWiki will be switched to another markup standard any time soon...
*However*, using XML as an intermediate, conversion from/to different standards could be easy and (mostly) lossless.

What caught my eye is that they have a footnoting standard. Are there any plans or experiments towards automatic footnote numbering in MediaWiki? It'd make references *much* less annoying.
