I'm fine with showing this form on Special:Contributions itself, but do we really need to show it when a user has been specified? It seems that a simple link to the form - "choose a different user" - should be sufficient.

Is a box a major nuisance? If not, there's no reason to make people click twice when they could click once.

Think most common use case: checking your own contributions, or following a link in RC, histories, etc. The case of typing a username into the box seems to be uncommon enough to justify a mere link.

My 2 cents: I almost never write the user names to see the contributions, they are too complicated :P And if i did, i already have a nice box to change it, called address bar. :-)

A text entry box right there would be useful for admins.

Sorry? I still don't see the need. Can you explain?

Convenience in the interface - one click is more convenient than two, and vastly more convenient than URL-twiddling.

Or put the form at the bottom, maybe, to make it less obtrusive. I see your point, it's interface clutter in most cases.

It's convenient once you're used to it, it's not convenient the first or second or third time when you get overwhelmed by all the buttons that do different things. Rarely-used interface elements *should* be extra clicks away.
