Hey Devs,
I'm Lakmal ,a final year undergraduate in University of Moratuwa ,Sri Lanka who is interested about participating in GSoc 2012 summer programme with WikiMedia Foundation . I already downloaded, and installed mediawiki and hoping to start with some small bugshttp://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Annoying_little_bugto make my self familiar with the code base.
After going through the suggested idea list from the community ,I developed a good interest in the above mentioned project where the final outcome would be set of plugins for MediaWiki to communicate with common photo management APIs ( Etc ,iPhoto ,Lightroom ..) .
I would be grateful if one of you can fill me up with the current status of this project idea . In the sense I would like to know whether someone is already working on this or this is sill open for an enthusiast to start working on :) .
I believe this is the right mailing list to ask this question ,if not I apologize and would expect someone to direct me to the correct place .
Hello lakmal, Good to meet you. This is indeed the right place. I don't see where it was suggested, but I haven't heard anyone to be working on that idea, so it seems perfectly available. I encourage you to prepare a draft proposal based on that.
Hey Thanks for the quick reply . It is the third idea which is mentioned in this suggested ideashttp://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Summer_of_Code_2012#Project_ideaslist . At the moment I'm doing a research on the availability of APIs of these photo management Softwares .I am hoping to come up with a draft proposal which includes possible plugin list and basic implementation details of the project in next few days .I will keep community updated about that .
Meanwhile any guidelines ,tips or comments from the community is more than welcome and highly appreciated .

Hi there It would be great to have a better photo management tool. Currently I am using google to host my creative commons photos, and using the easy upload tools from google plus to load into the albums, from there they can be imported into panoramio and imported into mediawiki.
So, really I find that that best way to upload photos is via google, and then import them into commons.
the things that are really needed is 1. GUI way to manage the geotagging of photos. 2. an easy way to import existing photos. 3. a better way to manage many photos. 4. Import of files from archive.org would also be good.
the entire system of processing photos for commons is too complex for beginners.

Hey Mike ,
First of all Thanks a lot for that nice feedback .
I would be grateful if you can illustrate a little bit on what you meant by "GUI way of managing pictures" . As I understood will it be a integrated option to the edit menu of an article where we can explore and search our photos in services like Flickr ,Picasa ,panoramio etc ,Select the required picture and insert the selected picture in to our wiki document by one click.
Please correct me if I'm wrong .

If that is the case, you may want to know that there is already an "Add Media Wizard" available as a gadget on some wikis: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Add_Media_Wizard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Multimedia_beta#Add_Media_Wizard

Just checked that extension documentation ,This seems to answer lots of questions raised by Mike as well .In that case I think I need to redefine my targeted scope. Should I focus on improving this extension by giving it access to some more repositories and adding some more image manipulation functionality (It says it already supports crop function?
Hope you all will help me on this matter .Thanks for all the replies

Yes, I would like to be able to select a few pictures, and be able to tag them together, add them to categories and such. The upload media wizard is great, and I would love if I could apply a category to many items. mike On Sat, Feb 11, 2012 at 12:48 PM, lakmal padmakumara < lakmalpadmakumara@gmail.com> wrote:

FYI, there's also a group of French students working on a (partially developed) export plugin to Wikimedia Commons from digiKam ( http://www.digikam.org ), and they may also create an export plugin for Shotwell too ( http://yorba.org/shotwell/ ), depending on their progress.
There may be some common feature list & front-end choices that you can reuse for your plugins. Unfortunately, I've never gotten around to consolidating the documentation.
Tell me if you want me to send a list of pointers to the scattered doc.

Great to hear ,I think I should take their progress in to my consideration in order to define the scope of my contribution as there is no point of reinventing the wheel. Thanks a lot for letting me know about this and if you have please send me any links that I can refer to their on going works.

That would be great :) . And also I went through the code of existing Flickr extension to get an idea about what kind of features should be provided by an this kind of extension. It would be great if you or someone else can give me some pointers to define the border/scope of my project so that I can take a from now on .

Thats great news! Any code to find? digikam is great, but also huge. I am using shotwell all the time.
Here's a quick summary:
Last year, I worked with a group of university students on a Qt library to interface with the MediaWiki API. They didn't implement the whole API, but enough for a proof-of-concept editor, and a prototype of export plugin to Wikimedia Commons. The plugin was developed as a component of the KIPI plugins.
The export plugin wasn't released because, although it worked, it didn't implement features specific to Wikimedia Commons, e.g. proper support for descriptions, licenses, categories, etc. See https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206842#c11 for a summary of where the plugin's currently at.
The university program ended this year, which means there was no new group of students to complete the project. Fortunately, Jean-Frédéric, a friend of mine from the French chapter (Cc:ed) had the opportunity to propose this project as part of another student program. As far as I know, they haven't started to work on it yet. There's some basic documentation (in French) at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Jean-Fr%C3%A9d%C3%A9ric/digiKam

Thanks for this wonderful set of resources. So as far as I understood we can use this Qt library in order to port more KDE photo managing applications like digiKam to communicate with MediaWiki.

Now my big question what will be a good summer project for me ,whether to work with library to support few more KDE applications (etc Shotwell) or else improving the Add Media Wizard [1] We talked on this thread or else coming up with few more standalone extensions like Flickr ?
After setting up my big goal I might be able to define the scope and the border of the project by few discussions with the community.
Is there a way to get in touch with the author of the original idea list [2] ,if there are multiple authors who might have suggested the third idea in which I'm interested at ?
