Hello, I'm writing an extension for MediaWiki so users can use a second factor authentication in their MediaWiki accounts.
I would like to know if there is any project on this topic, or if there is already someone working on something like this.
I'm planning on working in a MediaWiki extension that uses Latch ( https://latch.elevenpaths.com/www/service.html ) as a second factor.
This is my first time collaborating on a project this size so any advice will be very welcome.
Thank you for your time.
Cheers, Paula.
We use https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:OATHAuth on wikitech.wikimedia.org https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:TwoFactorAuthentication also exists

I for one would be interested in moving that extension out of beta and having an option in site configuration to require some or all users to have two factor authentication enabled.

For the record, Extension:TwoFactorAuthentication is deprecated and in the process of being merged into Extension:OATHAuth.
Also, I'd recommend, rather than making a brand new extension, just add Latch support into OATHAuth! :) I'm completely open to supporting new 2FA methods, and giving wiki administrators options in what they want to use.

Thank you Alex, I see that there is a beta version since 2012 with Google Authenticator.
So does this mean that there is no chance my implementation with Latch will also be available for MediaWiki users?
I will be working on this project anyway, because I already signed for it with a profesor at my university so it would be a pleasure for me if people could actually use it for securing their accounts!
Thanks for your time, Paula.

For what its worth, technical discussion about implenting extensions is in scope for this mailing list (imo), so its perfectly fine if you ask here, (Of course you should also feel free to email people directly if you prefer that).
So does this mean that there is no chance my implementation with Latch will also be available for MediaWiki users?
Just to be clear, do you mean MediaWiki or Wikimedia users (Wikimedia = Wikipedia and related sites. MediaWiki = anyone who uses the MediaWiki software)?
You can make any sort of MediaWiki extension you want, even if it duplicates another extension, and people may use it. For Wikimedia, probably only one extension would be chosen. Wikimedia also generally has very picky standards for using extensions, and it can be a lot of work (and politics!) to get an extension used on Wikimedia wikis. The existing 2 factor auth extension is (AFAIK) only used on wikitech, which is kind of different from being used on other Wikimedia wikis, so most wikis have no 2 factor auth solution deployed to them.
I would definitely reccomend coordinating with people working on similar extensions.
Pine said:

I think you misunderstand the extension status bar on mw.org. That is self-reported by the author, and the requirements are not consistently enforced. The contents of this status really has nothing to do with if the extension is actually used on Wikimedia wikis, so "taking it out of beta" would basically mean making a (rather meaningless) edit to the extension description page.

Sorry for the missunderstanding, what I write is an extension for MediaWiki not Wikimedia.
I will ask my question, even though I'm starting to think that I just mixed up MediaWiki and WikiMedia:
In order to add a digital latch to an account there is a need to add an input text field under the user prefferences account I attach a diagram to clarify this and also an screenshot that I just took from tuenti (is a social network used in Spain, kind of like facebook, that uses Latch).
So I need to know if I can add this input text in the mediawiki user page under "prefferences".
I would definitely reccomend coordinating with people working on similar
extensions.
Ok, I will do so.
Thank you for your time, Paula.
