This is a bug because the default behaviour of HTML rendering agents is to ignore extra whitespace, but the presence of the   prevents this.

Gmail's spam filter is quite aggressive regarding mailing lists; when I started using it it took some days to train it to keep the majority of my list traffic out of the spam folder.
