Hey,
I just noticed this on line 567 of LocalizationCache.php: # Load deprecated $wgExtensionAliasesFiles
Is this really deprecated? A lot of extensions, including several maintained by core people, are still using it... What should be used instead?
Cheers

I've updated http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgExtensionAliasesFiles accordingly ; please correct if I'm wrong.
Hey,
Thanks for the info. I'm still unclear on what the best practices are for 1.16 and later code. Am I supposed to put the $specialPageAliases in the same file i18n file as the regular messages, or is it better to put them in a separate file? And in case of the later, how is this file preferably named?
Cheers

Please put messages, aliases and magic words in different files, otherwise the Translate extension does not understand it.
Naming covention: * messages: <extensiondir>/<extensiondirname>.i18n.php * aliases: <extensiondir>/<extensiondirname>.alias.php * messages: <extensiondir>/<extensiondirname>.magic.php

General file naming conventions are here to find http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Coding_conventions#File_naming
We still don't have a specific file naming convention for Extension, but most writers use /<UpperCamelCase/ExtensionsDirname>/</UpperCamelCaseExtensionsDirname>/.*
for example extensions/TitleKey/TitleKey.php
And a good reading are the few books of the MediaWiki Virtual Library
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MVL and especially the http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MDG (MW Developer's Guide)

That *is* our specific file naming convention for extensions; if you ever do it differently you're doing it wrong. ;)
Note that there are still a few incorrectly-named extensions floating around in SVN.

The contrary (all localisations go together in foo.i18n.php) has been the standard since r52503. Does Translate really still not recognise this format after over two years?

It being possible since whenever does not make it the standard, as out of the 400 or so extension that Translate supports, actually zero do it that way.
As no patches have been submitted to change the behaviour of Translate and because it was never seen as an issue with a high priority, it was never addressed - and probably will not change until someone cares enough.
We'd happily welcome patches to Translate on this feature request or any of the other open issues and features (http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Issues_and_features)! -- Siebrand Mazeland

Surely since Translate doesn't support it, the fact that none of the extensions that Translate does support use it, is something of a non sequitur?!? :-p There are 552 .alias.php files in /trunk/extensions, and 1786 .i18n.php files. Obviously it's hard to put a number on how many of the difference are just extensions without any SpecialPages, but I'd venture that the combined syntax is quite common.
